Abstract:
Transitioning from linear business models towards circular ones has become a topic of increasing interest, especially in the plastics industry. On first sight it seems as if the use of plastics is not compatible with circular approaches, since plastic waste is considered a big issue. However, recycling is one way of reducing waste in the long run and is therefore a major player in working towards a more sustainable future. Hence, a recent trend towards plastics recycling in the plastics industry was observed. While foam, its stability and formability is already part of a great amount of research, this thesis closes the gap of research in the industry of plastics recycling. To evaluate the situation of foam control in mechanical plastics recycling, a series of tests were conducted at the production site of Ecoplast in Wildon, Austria, which is a subsidiary of Borealis AG. The found observations and test results were then used to create several ideas and solutions to enhance the effectivity of chemical antifoam usage in the prevailing system and thereby reduce operating costs. A 2x2 matrix, graded the ideas according to their operational cost saving and the solution's potential, in order to find the most promising idea. Subsequently, a survey, conducted among as many people entangled with the project as possible, was used to evaluate the best three concepts coming from the pre-evaluation. The evaluation was finalized with an economical assessment and resulted in the use of a foam sensor and additional spraying unit at the most critical part of the machine and controlling the rest by spraying only water onto the foam coverage. With this solution it was possible to increase the understanding of the system substantially and a potential reduction of 31.8% was calculated.
