Fracture mechanics simulations of particle reinforced ductile polymers

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to develop a modelling concept for crack propagation studies of a particle-reinforced polymer.The finite element method, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, and the cohesive zone model are applied.A two-dimensional finite element model of a centre-notched specimen is generated under the assumption of a plane strain situation and placement of cohesive zone elements in the expected crack path.The behaviour of the cohesive zone elements is defined by a bilinear traction separation law.A set of cohesive parameters, suitable to simulate crack propagation prior to the onset of global yielding, is first identified for a model without an inclusion in the crack path.For that, crack growth resistance curves are evaluated, as well as the share of energy dissipated due to plastic deformation and damage.In addition, stress and strain fields are observed at the crack tip and compared with analytical solutions from the modified slip line field.With a promising set of cohesive parameters for the polymer matrix material, additional simulations are performed with an inclusion in the crack path, where the Young's modulus of the inclusion is varied between more compliant, equal to, or more stiff compared to the bulk material.A very compliant inclusion does not allow the crack to initiate.Models with an inclusion in the crack path show a much higher portion of dissipated energy due to plastic deformation compared to models without an inclusion, which might indicate the ability of the inclusion to stop crack propagation.

Ziel dieser Arbeit ist das Aufsetzen eines Modellierungskonzeptes zur numerischen Analyse des Risswachstums in einem partikelverstärkten Polymer mit der Bezeichnung v37t25. Hierzu werden die Methode der Finiten Elemente, elastisch-plastische Bruchmechanik und das Kohäsivzonenmodell angewendet.Ein zweidimensionales Modell mit einem mittig liegenden Riss wird unter der Annahme eines ebenen Verzerrungszustandes erstellt. Kohäsivzonenelemente liegen im erwarteten Risspfad. Das Verhalten der Kohäsivzonenelemente ist durch ein bilineares Separationsgesetz definiert. Zunächst werden Parameter für das Separationsgesetz bestimmt, die eine Simulation des Rissfortschrittes ermöglichen, ohne dass dabei die Probe durchplastiziert. Zur Identifikation dieser Parameter werden Modelle ohne Inklusion untersucht. Risswiderstandskurven, die Energieanteile an plastischer Deformation und Schädigung werden ausgewertet. Spannungen und Dehnungen an der Rissspitze aus den Simulationen werden analytischen Lösungen, dem sogenannten modified slip line field, gegenübergestellt. Viele der untersuchten Parameterkombinationen führen zu atypischen Risswiderstandskurven, nicht zu Risswachstum oder zeigen instabiles Risswachstum. Ein vielversprechender Satz an Parametern wurde gewählt, um Simulationen mit einer Inklusion im Risspfad durchzuführen, deren Elastizitätsmodul im Vergleich zum umgebenden Material viel kleiner, gleich, beziehungsweise viel größer gewählt wurde. Bei Inklusionen mit sehr kleinem Elastizitätsmodul kommt es im Lauf der Simulation nicht zu einem Risswachstum. Inklusionen mit gleich großem, beziehungsweise größerem Elastizitätsmodul, zeigen einen höheren Anteil an dissipierter Energie zufolge plastischer Deformation als Simulationen ohne Inklusion im Risspfad.
