The idea behind the project Mountain Restort Stara Planina is to support a secluded village in the mountains of Serbia in its fight for existence. The village is called Dojkinci and it is located on the western end of the Balkan Mountains. This village constantly developed its culture and its economy through centuries, but over the last few decades, it has been suffering from emigration, negative natality and the collapse of its economy. This project provides a new concept, which is rooted in their tradition and way of life. It should give Dojkinci and the region a new perspective for the future. The traditional economy, which consist of stockbreeding and agriculture, would be revived and reorganized, adding tourism as a new industry. Through this project, the old dairy would be renovated, and an additional, new building would incorporate food production (fruits and vegetables), as well as a restaurant and a shop, where the products would be sold. Tourism would be enabled through a camping site, including a utility building and a half-closed indoor camping space, and several bungalows that would provide a more private and comfortable space for the visitors. The general concept is that the visitors can participate in the food production and learn the traditional ways of food production from the villagers, who would be included in the whole concept. Visitors would have the opportunity to explore and enjoy the wonderful nature of the mountain throughout all four seasons of the year. The Resort would offer a wide range of activities for groups and individuals, like theme hikes, school excursions, exclusive experiences for visitors of all ages, team building concepts, seminars, winter vacations, camping, etc. The architecture is based on a new interpretation of the traditional local architecture, using the same natural materials that are available in the region. The intervention into the existing structure and terrain would be minimal – they would be renovated if necessary, and included into the concept as they are, taking over new functions if required.
