Surface runoff from agricultural hillslopes is one of the most important factors controlling soil erosion, land degradation and stream water contamination. The mechanisms of surface runoff generation are complex, depending on the meteorological, soil, vegetation and land use characteristics. Understanding the connectivity of flow paths and the different properties present in them is necessary for a more complete understanding of system behaviour. This contribution aims to present the estimation and evaluation of the connectivity of saturated area on an agricultural hillslope using time-lapse photography. The study is conducted on a 26.8 ha hillslope at the Hydrological Open Air Laboratory (HOAL) experimental catchment in Austria. The connectivity of saturated area is characterized by the structural connectivity scale index proposed in Western et al., (2001) (https://doi.org/10.1029/2000WR900241) using digital camera observations from the period 2014-2020. The temporal dynamics of the connectivity are estimated from the time-lapse photography of 15 significant surface runoff events, using approximately 830 images per day of the event, combined with the runoff observations in the stream as well as hydrological variables such as precipitation, soil moisture, and groundwater levels. Using the structural connectivity scale index, the results allow the identification of two groups of connectivity types in the HOAL. The different connectivity types exhibit hydrologically distinct behaviour, from which the conclusion follows that the connectivity function is hydrologically significant. The classification of the events per group is based on the value of the estimated connectivity scale. Events with an estimated maximum connectivity scale below 10 m are considered “disconnected” since the runoff pattern passing through the area stays patchy or disconnected; conversely events with an estimated connectivity scale above 10 m are considered “connected” since the runoff pattern passing through the observed area remains connected. The results show that the maximum saturated area during an event varies between 10 and 230 m2. The formation of the two discussed types of connectivity is mainly controlled by initial soil moisture and rainfall characteristics
