Compressed configuration path integral Monte Carlo in the canonical and grand canonical ensemble

Abstract

Der thermodynamische Erwartungswert eines Operators in einem quantenmechanischen Vielteilchensystem ist gegeben durch die Spur des Produkts dieses Operators mit dem Dichteoperator. Die direkte Berechnung dieser Produktspur ist jedoch nur für kleine Systeme möglich, da die Dimension des zugrundeliegenden Hilbertraums exponentiell mit der Systemgröße wächst. Für größere Systeme ist es nötig auf andere Methoden zurückzugreifen, wie etwa Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC). PIMC Methoden stellen die Spur als eine gewichtete Summe oder ein gewichtetes Integral über einen Konfigurationsraum dar und approximieren das Ergebnis, indem sie über zufällige Stichproben aus dem Konfigurationsraum summieren. Werden Fermionen betrachtet, so muss die Summe auf vollständig antisymmetrische Vielteilchenzustände beschränkt werden. Diese Beschränkung führt zum sogenannten Fermion Sign Problem, welches die Anwendbarkeit von PIMC auf gewisse Temperatur- und Dichte-Regionen limitiert. In dieser Arbeit fokussieren wir uns auf die Methode Configuration PIMC (CPIMC), welche erstmals von Schoof et al. in [7] vorgestellt wurde. Die Gewichte in CPIMC enthalten den Integranden eines mehrdimensionalen Integrals, dessen Integrationsvariablen Teil des Konfigurationsraums sind. Wir versuchen diese Methode zu verbessern, indem wir das gesamte Integral als Teil des Gewichts auffassen, was zu einem verkleinerten oder "komprimierten" Konfigurationsraum führt. Wir testen unsere Modifikation am Beispiel des eindimensionalen homogenen Elektronengases (1D-UEG) und vergleichen die Ergebnisse mit CPIMC und der direkten Berechnung der Spur.

The thermodynamic expectation value of an operator of a quantum many-particle system can be obtained by evaluating the trace of the product of this operator and the density operator. However, this method is only feasible for small systems, since the dimension of the Hilbert space describing such systems increases exponentially with the system size. For larger systems it becomes necessary to resort to other methods, such as Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC). PIMC methods reformulate the trace in terms of a weighted sum or integral over a configuration space and approximate the result by sampling elements of this configuration space. If fermions are considered, one must restrict the sum to antisymmetric many-particle states. This restriction leads to the so-called Fermion Sign Problem which limits the applicability of PIMC to certain temperature and density regions. Here we focus on Configuration PIMC (CPIMC), which was first introduced by Schoof et al. in [7]. The weights in CPIMC contain the integrand of a multidimensional integral, whose integration variables are included in the MC configuration space. In an attempt to improve this method, we modify it such that the integral as a whole becomes part of the weight, which leads to a smaller or “compressed” MC configuration space. We test the modified algorithm for the one-dimensional uniform electron gas (1D-UEG) against CPIMC and exact results obtained by directly evaluating the traces.
