Kontinuität : weiterbauen von Spuren ins Zeitgenössische anhand von Aufstockungsprojekten

Abstract

Die theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff der Kontinuität und verschiedenen Strategien des Weiterbauens durch Aufstockung, bildet die Grundlage für die Bearbeitung des Entwurfsprojekts - der Aufstockung eines Bestandsgebäudes in der Mariahilfer Straße 160 in Wien. Weiterbauen beschreibt eine architektonische Haltung, die bestehende Strukturen respektiert und durch Gestaltungsprinzipien in Einklang mit deren Geschichte und Kontext weiterentwickelt. Aufbauend auf Ernesto Nathan Rogers Definition von Kontinuität wird eine Umbaustrategie entwickelt, die Transformationen durch Fortschreibung, Interpretation und Weiterentwicklung in das Zeitgenössische versteht. Diese Strategie integriert sich in die historische und städtebauliche Umgebung des Bauwerks. Die Analyse ausgewählter Referenzprojekte auf Stadtebene, Gebäudeebene und Detailebene sowie Aufstockungsbeispiele liefern wertvolle Erkenntnisse, die in den Entwurf einfließen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass in der dicht bebauten Stadt Wien eine Erweiterung in horizontaler Richtung nicht möglich ist, sondern hauptsächlich eine Aufstockung, also eine Erweiterung nach oben in die vertikale Richtung, erfolgen muss. Aus diesem Grund liegt der Fokus auf der Aufstockung aus dem Blickwinkel der Kontinuität. Das Bestandsgebäude, bestehend aus einem kleinen Trakt und einem Langhaus, wird zu einem Frauenhaus mit angeschlossenem Familienzentrum umgenutzt. Im Entwurfsprozess wird das theoretisch erarbeitete Wissen getestet, indem das Bestandsgebäude umfassend untersucht und sein Potenzial für eine Aufstockung als lineare Erweiterung des Vorhandenen in der Vertikalen erprobt wird.

The theoretical engagement with the concept of continuity and various strategies of further construction through extension forms the basis for the development of the design project - the extension of an existing building at Mariahilfer Straße 160 in Vienna. Continuing construction describes an architectural attitude that respects existing structures and develops them further through design principles in harmony with their history and context.Building on Ernesto Nathan Rogers‘ definition of continuity, a renovation strategy is developed that understands transformations through continuation, interpretation, and advancement into the contemporary. This strategy integrates into the historical and urban context of the building. The analysis of selected reference projects at the city level, building level, and detail level, as well as examples of building extensions, provides valuable insights that are incorporated into the design. It becomes clear that in the densely built city of Vienna, horizontal expansion is not possible, but rather an extension upwards in the vertical direction must primarily take place. For this reason, the focus is on the extension from the perspective of continuity. The existing building, consisting of a small wing and a longhouse, will be converted into a women‘s shelter with an attached family center. In the design process, the theoretically developed knowledge is tested by comprehensively examining the existing building and testing its potential for an addition as a linear extension of the existing building vertically.
