Safe and efficient model-predictive vehicle control in mixed and automated traffic

Abstract

Vernetzte und automatisierte Fahrzeuge (CAVs) halten langsam Einzug in den öffentlichen Verkehr. Diese neue Klasse von Verkehrsteilnehmern nutzt hochentwickelte Sensor- und Kommunikationstechnologien in Kombination mit komplexen Regelalgorithmen zur Realisierungautonomen Fahrens. Ansätze der optimalen Regelung bieten dabei ein großes Potenzial, umein sicheres, komfortables und äußerst effizientes Verkehrsverhalten ohne menschliches Zutun zu erreichen. In dieser kumulativen Dissertation stellen wir fortschrittliche Fahrzeugregelkonzepte vor, die modernste Kommunikations- und Sensortechnologien nutzen, um sicheres und effizientes automatisiertes Fahren auf öffentlichen Straßen zu fördern. Insbesondere schlagen wir modellprädiktive Regelungsansätze (MPC) für string stabiles Fahrzeugplatooning und prädiktive Hindernisvermeidung vor. Für das effiziente Testen und Validieren dieser Regelkonzepte wird eine spezielle Simulationsumgebung entwickelt, die die Simulation komplexer und hochdynamischer Verkehrsszenarien sowie die Durchführung von Co-Simulationsstudien mit realitätsnahen Fahrsimulatoren ermöglicht. Zur Realisierung dicht gepackter und string stabiler Fahrzeugplatoons stellen wirein kollisionsfreies verteiltes MPC-Konzept vor, welches eine neuartige Zeitabstandsreferenz und optional Fahrzeug-zu-Fahrzeug (V2V) Kommunikation nutzt, um robustes, kollisionsfreiesund string stabiles automatisiertes Fahren zu gewährleisten. Wir erweitern den Problemumfang auf 2D-Trajektorien- und Bewegungsplanung mit impliziter Hindernisvermeidung für CAVs unter Berücksichtigung der Fahrzeug Längs- und Querdynamik. Sichere, effiziente und maximal informierte modellprädiktive Hindernisvermeidung in Echtzeit ist eine große Herausforderung, insbesondere wenn man global optimale Lösungen in verschiedenen komplexen Verkehrssituationen anstrebt. Wir lösen dieses Problem, indem wir (i) ein MPC-Problem der gemischt-ganzzahligen quadratischen Programmierung (MIQP) in differentiell flachen Koordinaten formulieren, welches global optimal gelöst werden kann, und (ii) es mit einem auf quadratischer Programmierung (QP) basierenden MPC in einer zweischichtigen Reglerarchitektur kombinieren. Während der QP-MPC in jedem Zeitschritt lokale Hindernisvermeidung gewährleistet, wird seine Problemformulierung asynchron durch die global optimale Lösung des NP-schweren MIQP-MPC aktualisiert. Beide MPCs beziehen Positionsprädiktionen von umliegenden Verkehrsteilnehmern, die über V2V-Kommunikation empfangen werden, in ihre Optimalregelungsproblem Formulierungen ein. Um optimale Spurwechsel- und Überholmanöver zu ermöglichen, erweitern wir das MPC-Konzept zur Hindernisvermeidung um eine gemischt-ganzzahlige Fahrspurauswahl und integrieren es in eine zweischichtige Regelarchitektur, die eine Geschwindigkeits- und eine Zeitabstandsstrategie kombiniert. Darüber hinaus wird eine neue Methode zur Reduzierung der Rechenkomplexität der implementierten Optimierungsprobleme eingeführt, um Echtzeitberechnungen zu unterstützen. Wir validieren die entwickelten MPC-Konzepte in detaillierten Co-Simulationsstudien gegen realistische Modellfehler und untersuchen und zeigen die Agilität und Robustheit der Regler in Bezug auf mehrere komplexe Verkehrsszenarien. Zusammenfassend ermöglichen wir string-stabiles Fahrzeug-Platooning und machen NP-schwere gemischt-ganzzahlige Programmierung für global optimale und maximal informierte CAV-Bewegungsplanung mit präziser Hindernisvermeidung in Echtzeit zugänglich. Die methodischen MIQP-MPC-Formulierungen in differentiell flachen Frenet- (oder globalen kartesischen) Koordinaten ermöglichen zuverlässige und leicht interpretierbare Lösungen mit wohldefinierten und realisierbaren Aktionen in diversen komplexen Verkehrsszenarien.

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are slowly introduced in today's public traffic. This new class of traffic participants uses highly sophisticated perception and communication technologies in combination with complex control algorithms for autonomous driving. To this end, optimal control approaches provide great potential to achieve safe, comfortable, and extremely efficient traffic behavior without human intervention. Within this cumulative thesis, we provide advanced vehicle control concepts that leverage state-of-the-art communication and perception technologies to promote safe and efficient automated driving on public roads. In particular, we propose model predictive control (MPC) approaches for string-stable vehicle platooning and predictive obstacle avoidance. For the efficient testing and validation of these control concepts, a dedicated simulation framework is provided that enables the simulation of complex and highly dynamic traffic scenarios together with the capability to perform co-simulation studies with high-fidelity driving simulators. Addressing the challenge of maintaining tightly packed and string-stable vehicle platooning, we propose a safety-extended distributed MPC concept that utilizes a novel time gap spacing policy and optional vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication to ensure robust, collision-free, and string-stable automated driving. Extending the problem scope, we consider 2D trajectory planning and motion control with implicit obstacle avoidance for CAVs, taking into account longitudinal and lateral vehicle dynamics. Safe, efficient, and maximally informed model predictive obstacle avoidance control in real-time is a major challenge, especially when aiming for globally optimal solutions in diverse complex traffic situations. We solve this problem by (i) formulating a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) MPC problem in differentially flat coordinates that can be solved to global optimality and (ii) combining it with a quadratic programming-(QP-)based MPC in a two-layer control architecture. While the QP-MPC ensures local obstacle avoidance in every time step, its problem formulation is asynchronously updated by the globally optimal solution of the NP-hard MIQP-MPC. Both MPCs incorporate position predictions of surrounding traffic participants received via V2V communication in their optimal control problem (OCP) formulations. To enable optimal lane-change and overtaking maneuvers, we augment the obstacle avoidance MPC concept with mixed-integer-based lane selection capabilities and integrate it into a two-layer control architecture that combines a velocity and a time-gap tracking policy. Additionally, a new method to reduce the computational complexity of the implemented OCPs is introduced to support real-time computation. We validate the developed MPC concepts in detailed co-simulation studies against realistic model errors and observe and highlight the controllers' agility and robustness with respect to multiple complex traffic scenarios. In conclusion, we enable string-stable vehicle platooning and make NP-hard mixed-integer programming accessible for globally optimal and maximally informed CAV motion control with precise obstacle avoidance in real-time. The methodical MIQP-MPC formulations in differentially flat Frenet (or global Cartesian) coordinates allow for reliable and easily interpretable solutions with well-defined and feasible actions in diverse complex traffic scenarios.
