Abstract

Das Valens-Aquädukt war ein antikes römisches Aquädukt, das im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. von Kaiser Valens in der Stadt Konstantinopel, dem heutigen Istanbul in der heutigen Türkei, erbaut wurde. Das Aquädukt war ein Teil des längste Wassertransport-Systems mit einer beeindruckenden Länge von 426 km und versorgte Konstantinopel mit Wasser. Bis heute ist nur ein kleiner Teil der ursprünglichen Länge von Aquädukt, nur 925 m, erhalten geblieben. Im Gegensatz zu anderen römischen Aquädukten auf der ganzen Welt hat das Valens-Aquädukt seine strukturelle und formale Integrität bewahrt und befindet sich im Herzen einer Großstadt. Das Valens-Aquädukt hat eine maximale Höhe von etwa 29 Metern mit einer konstanten Neigung von 1:1000. Die Breite des Aquädukts variiert zwischen 7,75 und 8,24 Metern. Die Pfeiler sind 3,70 Meter dick und die unteren Bögen sind 4 Meter breit. Das Gebiet, in dem sich das Valens-Aquädukt befindet, ist ein historischer Teil Istanbuls und wird durch einen sehr belebten und wichtigen Boulevard, der auf einer senkrechten Achse durch die unteren Bögen des Aquädukts verläuft, stark in zwei Teile geteilt. Obwohl das Gebiet sehr authentische Nachbarschaft von Istanbul umfasst, dominiert der infrastrukturelle Aspekt die Stadtlandschaft. Die Aufteilung der Gebiete und die dominante Präsenz der Infrastruktur sind die Probleme, die im Rahmen der städtischen Neuorganisation erschafft werden müssen. Die adaptive Reuse ist seit den 1970er Jahren ein aufstrebendes Feld in der Architektur und stellt eine Alternative zu Konservierung und Restaurierung dar, um die Funktion eines bestehenden Kulturerbes zu revitalisieren und neu zu definieren. Die Schaffung neuer Landschaften durch die Adaptive Reuse der vorhandenen Ruinen alter Strukturen ist für die Stadterneuerung vorteilhaft und gibt einem Kulturerbe ein neues Ziel, ohne dessen Authentizität zu zerstören, die manchmal eine kritische Rolle für die Identität des Gebiets spielen kann. Beispiele für diese Art der Stadterneuerung im Kontext grüner Landschaften sind die High Line in New York und der Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. Die historischen Aspekte des Valens-Aquädukts spielen eine wichtige archäologische Rolle, aber auch seine authentische Silhouette macht es zu einem sehr wichtigen Aspekt für die Identität des Gebiets.Das Ziel dieses Projekts ist, die strukturelle Integrität des Valens-Aquädukts im Rahmen der Adaptive Reuse wiederzuverwenden, um auf dem Aquädukt eine 925 m lange Panoramastraße zu bauen, ähnlich der High Line in New York, mit dem Ziel, die infrastrukturelle Präsenz des stark befahrenen Atatürk Boulevards zu überwinden und im Rahmen der Stadterneuerung zwei getrennte Stadtteile entlang des Aquädukts miteinander zu verbinden. Aufgrund eines schweren Erdbebens im Jahr 1509 stürzte die Ostseite des Aquädukts ein. Später wurde es von den Osmanen restauriert, die Teile des Bauwerks in ihr Wassertransportsystem integrierten. Im Rahmen des Projekts ist geplant, den eingestürzten Abschnitt in ein byzantinisches Museum zu verwandeln, das die authentische Silhouette des Aquädukts bewahrt. Das Projekt umfasst eine Innenausstellungsfläche von ca. 430 m2 und eine Außenfläche von etwa 820 m2. Zudem wird die Panoramastraße eine zusätzliche Außenfläche von rund 2200 m2 bieten.

The Aqueduct of Valens was an ancient Roman aqueduct, which was built in 4th Century D.C. by the emperor Valens in the city of Constantinople, which is now known as Istanbul in present day Turkey. The Aqueduct was once the part of the longest roman water supply system in existence, with an immense length of 426 km, supplying water for Constantinople. Until today, only a small portion of the original length of the aqueduct, with only 925 m, survived. In contrast to other roman aqueducts around the world, Valens Aqueduct has preserved its structural and formal integrity and is located in the heart of a major city.The Aqueduct of Valens has a maximum height of about 29 metres with a constant slope of 1:1000. The width of the aqueduct varies from 7.75 metres to 8.24 metres.The pillars are 3.70 metres thick, and the arches of the lower order are 4 metres wide.The area, in which Valens aqueduct is located, is a very historical part of Istanbul and is divided heavily in two parts by a very busy and important Boulevard, which runs on a perpendeciluar axis, through the lower arches, of the aqueduct. Although the area includes very authentic neighbourhoods of Istanbul, the infrastructural aspect dominates the urban landscape alongside the landmark. The division of the areas and dominant infrastructural presence are the issues, which must be tackled, in the context of urban reorganization.Adaptive Re-use is an emerging field in architecture since 1970s, as an alternative way to conservation and restoration, in order to regenerate or redefine the function of an existing heritage. Creation of new landscapes by adaptively reusing the existing ruins of old structures benefits urban regeneration and gives a new reason for existence of a heritage without destroying its authenticity, which can play sometimes a key role for identity of surrounding area. The examples for this kind of urban regeneration, in context of green landscapes, are High Line in New York and Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. Historical aspects of Valens aqueduct plays an important archeological role, but also its authenticity makes it a a very important aspect for the identity of the area.The aim of this project is to adaptively reuse the structural integrity of the Valens Aqueduct, in order to build a 925 m panorama road on top of the aqueduct, in a similar way as the High Line in New York, with the aim of overcome the infrastructural presence of the busy boulevard and bind two seperated area alongside the aqueduct together, in the context of urban regeneration.Because of a massive earthquake in 1509, the eastern side of the aqueduct collapsed. It was later restored by the Ottomans, who also incorporated parts of the aqueduct into their water transportation system. Furthermore, as part of the project, the collapsed section is planned to be transformed into an open-air Byzantine museum while preserving the authentic silhouette of the aqueduct.The project envisions an indoor exhibition space of approximately 430 m2 and an outdoor exhibition area of around 820 m2. In addition, the panoramic road will provide an outdoor net area of roughly 2200 m2.
