Abstract

Der Begriff “Archiving” Opera, unter welchem die Diplomarbeit steht, beinhaltet eine allgegenwärtige und kontroverse Grundsatzdebatte im Opern- und Theatermilieu. In diesen Bereichen spricht man davon, dass das aufgeführte Kunstwerk für einen Moment gemacht wird. Mit dem Ende des Stücks ist dieser Moment abgeschlossen, es gibt keine Aufzeichnungen oder Vervielfältigungen. Jeder Auftritt ist einzigartig und bleibt vergänglich. Somit auch die Frage, inwieweit hierbei Oper und Theater vertretbar „archiviert“ werden können. Der Inhalt der Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich folgendermaßen mit Elementen in besagtem Milieu, die tatsächlich für den nachhaltigen Fortbestand der Kulturszene von Notwendigkeit sind, wie sämtliche Dokumente (Abendzettel, Programme, Partituren, etc.), Kostüme und zu Teilen auch Bühnenkulisse und Requisiten. Der architektonische Entwurf für ein solches Archiv steht ergo stets unter der angesprochenen Prämisse die Einzigartigkeit/Vergänglichkeit des Theaters nicht auszunützen, sondern Potentiale in jenem Kontext auszuschöpfen. Der prädestinierte Standort im Arsenal bringt den Umgang mit dem Bestand einher, genauer mit einem dreigeschossigen, ca. 200m Langbau, genannt „Objekt Nr.6“. Das architektonische Konzept, das angewandt wird, beruht auf geometrischen Körpern und Volumen, die an benötigter Stelle angedockt werden, gleichermaßen eine klare Sonderung zwischen Bestand und Neubau aufweisen, und in Summe ein zusammengehöriges Ensemble ergeben. Aber nicht „nur“ ein Archiv mit Verwaltung und Forschung soll entstehen, sondern auch ein neuer Anlaufpunkt für kulturszenische Ausstellungen und Events. Im Weiteren werden die umliegenden versiegelten Freiflächen in den Entwurf miteinbezogen, entsiegelt und landschaftsgestalterisch aufgearbeitet. Weitere Thematiken sind im Nutzungskonzept enthalten: das Archiv mit Verwaltung und Forschung im Hauptbestandsgebäude; ein Zusatzbau für Anlieferung und Manipulation; ein Zusatzbau für Ausstellungen, Proben und Veranstaltungen; ein Amphitheater für Freilichtvorstellungen. Aus der Historie heraus bringt das leerstehende Bestandsgebäude aus dem romantischen Historismus durch sein Backsteinmauerwerk, aber auch durch pflanzliche Überwucherungen einen gewissen romantischen Ruinen-Charme mit sich, welcher erhalten bleiben soll und durch neue natürliche Materialien, wie vor allem Lehm, in Symbiose gesetzt wird. Eine Ruine wird wiederbelebt, indem Historie in Historie archiviert wird. Summa summarum bietet sich durch den architektonischen Entwurf eine Lösung im Sinne der kulturspezifischen Archivproblematik dar und ist darüber hinaus eine Bereicherung für die Kulturszene selbst.

The term “Archiving” Opera, which is the subject of the thesis, contains an omnipresent and controversial fundamental debate in the opera and theater milieu. In these areas, people talk about the fact that the work of art performed is made for a moment. When the piece ends, this moment is over; there are no recordings or copies. Each performance is unique and remains transient. This also raises the question of the extent to which opera and theater can be justifiably “archived”. The content of the thesis deals with elements in the milieu mentioned that are actually necessary for the sustainable continued existence of the cultural scene, such as all documents (cast sheets, programs, musical scores, etc.), costumes and, to some extent, stage scenery and props. The architectural design for such an archive is therefore always based on the aforementioned premise of not exploiting the uniqueness/transience of the theater, but rather realize the potential in that context. The predestined location in the Arsenal brings with it the dealing wit the existing building, more precisely with a three-story, approximately 200m long building, called „Object No. 6“. The architectural concept that is applied is based on geometric bodies and volumes that are docked where necessary, equally show a clear separation between the existing building and the new building, and in total create a cohesive ensemble. But not „just“ an archive with administration and research is to be created, but also a new contact point for cultural exhibitions and events. The surrounding sealed open spaces will also be included in the design, unsealed and landscaped. Other topics are included in the usage concept: the archive, administration and research in the main existing building; an additional building for delivery and handling; an additional building serving as a visitor center with exhibition, rehearsal or event areas; an amphitheater for open-air performances. In terms of history, the empty existing building from the romantic historicism period brings with it a certain romantic ruin charm through its brickwork, but also through plant overgrowth, which is to be preserved and brought into symbiosis with new natural materials such as predominantly clay and rammed earth. A ruin is revived by archiving history within history. All in all, the architectural design offers a solution in terms of the culture-specific archive problem and is also an enrichment for the cultural scene itself.
