Generalstab 2.0 : Revitalization of an architectural masterpiece - a space for education, culture and innovation

Abstract

Das Generalstabsgebäude der jugoslawischen Armee von Nikola Dobrović in Belgrad, ein ikonisches architektonisches Meisterwerk des 20. Jahrhunderts, wurde während der NATO-Bombardierung 1999 stark beschädigt. Heute ist es eines der Merkzeichen der Stadt. Es steht für Konflikt, Transformation und die Hoffnung auf einen Wiederaufbau.Diese Masterarbeit widmet sich der Revitalisierung von Gebäude A dieses Komplexes durch einen umfassenden Ansatz, der die Entmilitarisierung des Raums mit einer neuen kulturellen, bildungsorientierten und innovativen Nutzung verbindet.Wesentlicher Entwurfsansatz ist, die Essenz des Bauwerks zu erhalten. Das Gebäude B wird im dargestellten Masterplan mit einer neuen Funktionsvorgabe berücksichtigt, jedoch ohne detaillierte Bearbeitung.Zunächst wird die historische, architektonische und städtebauliche Bedeutungdes Ortes analysiert, um die vorhandenen Potenziale und Herausforderungen zu identifizieren. Aufbauend auf dieser Analyse wird ein architektonisches Konzept entwickelt, das die Verbindung von Vergangenheit und Zukunft, von Erbe und Moderne in den Fokus rückt.Der Entwurf zielt darauf ab, das Gebäude in ein lebendiges Zentrum für Kultur,Bildung und kreative Zusammenarbeit zu transformieren. Dies gelingt mit einer klaren funktionalen Gliederung: Interaktion mit der Öffentlichkeit, allgemeine Erholungsbereiche (Wintergärten und Freibereiche), Lernräume, technologische und künstlerische Werkstätten sowie Veranstaltungs- und Konferenzräume. Das Projekt soll die Umgebung durch das Konzept des neuen Kulturortes beleben und mit seiner umfassenden Begrünung - inklusive Erholungsbereiche für alle - das Stadtklima verbessern.Durch die Kombination aus Erhalt des Bauwerks, nachhaltigen Bauweisen und Materialien, sowie innovativem Design soll das Projekt eine neue Funktion für das Generalstabsgebäude definieren und gleichzeitig die Identität und Geschichte des Ortes respektieren. Diese Planung kann die Grundlage für einen möglichen neuen Masterplan zu diesem Areal sein - zur Transformation in einen Ort der Versöhnung, Kreativität, Innovation und Kontemplation, positiv und zukunftsweisend.

The General Staff Building of the Yugoslav Army, designed by Nikola Dobrovićin Belgrade, is an iconic architectural masterpiece of the 20th century that was severely damaged during the NATO bombing in 1999. Today, it stands as one ofthe city’s landmarks, symbolizing conflict, transformation, and the hope for reconstruction.This thesis is dedicated to the revitalization of Building A within this complex through a comprehensive approach that merges the demilitarization of the space with a new cultural, educational, and innovative purpose. The central design concept focuses on preserving the essence of the building. Building B is considered within the proposed master plan with a new functional designation, although without detailed elaboration.The historical, architectural, and urban significance of the site will be analyzed to identify both its existing potentials and challenges. Based on this analysis, an architectural concept will be developed that emphasizes the connection between the past and the future, heritage and modernity.The design aims to transform the building into a vibrant center for culture, education, and creative collaboration. This is achieved through a clear functional layout:public interaction spaces, general recreational areas (including conservatories and outdoor spaces), learning areas, technological and artistic workshops, as wellas event and conference rooms. The project seeks to enliven the surrounding area with the concept of a new cultural hub, improving the urban climate through extensive green ery and providing relaxation areas for all.By combining the preservation of the building, sustainable construction methods and materials, alongside innovative design, the project intends to define a new function for the General Staff Building while respecting the identity and history ofthe site. This planning could serve as the foundation for a potential new masterplan for the area—transforming it into a place of reconciliation, creativity, innovation, and contemplation, positively shaping the future.
