Bau im Dialog : Strategien des Umbauens für das Bezirkszentrum Kagran

Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit behandelt den Entwurf für den Umbau des Bezirkszentrums Kagran im 22. Wiener Gemeindebezirk Donaustadt. Das Gebäudeensemble, entworfen vom Architektenteam Leber, Matha, Fickl und Kremnitzer, entstand in den 1970er Jahren als Fragment der städtebaulichen Planung nach Roland Rainer, wodurch eine Dezentralisierung des Stadtzentrums mit der Schaffung städtischer Zentren in den Außenbezirken erreicht werden sollte. Das Bezirkszentrum beinhaltet öffentliche sowie administrative Funktionen, darunter ein Amtshaus, eine Volkshochschule, ein Jugendzentrum und eine Stadtbibliothek. Nach nur 50-jährigem Bestehen soll das Gebäude zugunsten eines neuen Wohnquartiers abgerissen werden. Aus diesem Anlass setzt sich diese Arbeit mit der Möglichkeit des Erhalts der Gebäudesubstanz auseinander und formuliert verschiedene Strategien des Umbauens. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird eine theoretische Grundlage über das Thema Umbau geschaffen und dessen kulturelle sowie ökologische Bedeutung untersucht. Der zweite Teil beinhaltet eine umfassende Bestandsanalyse, welche die geschichtliche und die gesellschaftliche Dimension der Bezirkszentren näher beleuchtet. Weiters wird eine architekturhistorische Einordnung vorgenommen und das Gebäude in seiner konstruktiven Sprache analysiert. In einem Exkurs wird das ORF-Zentrum am Küniglberg von Roland Rainer in Bezug auf konstruktive und denkmalpflegerische Zusammenhänge betrachtet. Im dritten Teil werden die Erkenntnisse zu einem Entwurf zusammengefügt, welcher verschiedene Methoden des Umbauens beinhaltet. Das ehemalige Amtshaus wird zu einem Wohnbau umgenutzt, die Fassadengestaltung wird dafür geändert und angepasst. Auf dem Trakt der Volkshochschule entsteht ein Aufbau, der als eine Erweiterung des bestehenden kulturellen Angebots dient, und gleichzeitig zukünftige Nutzungsänderungen durch flexible Raumaufteilungen ermöglicht.

This diploma thesis deals with the design for the conversion of the Kagran district centre in Vienna's 22nd district of Donaustadt. The ensemble of buildings, designed by the team of architects Leber, Matha, Fickl and Kremnitzer, was created in the 1970s as a fragment of Roland Rainer's urban planning, which aimed to decentralise the city centre and create urban centres in the outer districts. The district centre contains public and administrative functions, including an office building, an adult education centre, a youth centre and a municipal library. After only 50 years of existence, the building is to be demolished in favour of a new residential quarter. On this occasion, this thesis deals with the possibility of preserving the building structure and formulates various strategies for a conversion. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical basis for the topic of conversions and examines its cultural and ecological significance. The second part contains a comprehensive analysis of the current situation, which takes a closer look at the historical and social dimensions of the district centres. Furthermore, an architectural-historical classification is made and the building is analysed in its constructive language. In an excursus, Roland Rainer's ORF Centre Küniglberg is examined in terms of its constructional and heritage conservation context. In the third part, the findings are combined into a design that includes various methods of remodelling. The former office building will be converted into a residential building, and the façade design will be changed and adapted accordingly. The adult education centre wing will be converted into an extension of the existing cultural offering, while at the same time allowing for future changes of use through flexible room layouts.
