RE:HABITAT Freudenau : ein Permakulturbetrieb mit Tagesstätte und Not- & Gästeunterkünften

Abstract

Der südöstliche Teil des zweiten Wiener Gemeindebezirks, bekannt als Freudenau, ist ein Auwaldgebiet mit vielfältigem Natur- und Kulturraum mit besonderem Mikroklima und hoher Biodiversität. Am Stadtrand gelegen und dennoch in Stadtnähe ist die Region durch mangelnde Infrastruktur und rückläufige Nutzung von Freizeit- und Veranstaltungsflächen zunehmend unbelebt, besonders der Teil südöstlich des Lusthauses. Im Zuge des Projektes wird untersucht, wie das Gebiet durch städtebauliche Interventionen und durch die Enstehung neuer Institutionen wiederbelebt und besser angebunden werden kann. Basierend auf einer umfassenden Gebietsanalyse, ist ein architektonisches und programmatisches Konzept eines Permakulturbetriebs entstanden. Dabei wurden historische Dokumente, Vor-Ort-Begehungen, Interviews und die Recherche vergleichbarer Projekte einbezogen und im Projekt ökologische und soziale Nachhaltigkeitskriterien wie Permakultur-Designprinzipien, modulare Bauweise und Energieeffizienz durch Kreislaufsysteme berücksichtigt. Das Ensemble beinhaltet eine Tagesstätte sowie Not- und Gästeunterkünfte und wird von temporären Bewohner:innen, meist vulnerable Personengruppen, betrieben. Dadurch wird ihnen eine geregelete Tagesstruktur sowie soziale Integration ermöglicht. Ergänzend bietet das Areal Erholungs-, Bildungs- und Freizeitmöglichkeiten für Bewohner:innen und Besucher:innen. Das Konzept knüpft an historische Elemente und gegenwärtigen Bestand der Freudenau an und wird durch städtebauliche und architektonische Eingriffe ergänzt und wiederbelebt, somit den Stadtbewohner:innen als Gemeinschaftsfläche und Naherholungsgebiet „zurück“ gegeben. Es werden bestehende Strukturen, wie ehemalige Gewächshäuser, ein leerstehendes Pumpenhaus und ein ungenutzter Wasserturm in des Projekt integriert. An frühere Nutzungstraditionen anknüpfend entsteht am Donaukanalufer eine neue Badestelle. Bewusst geplante Wegführungen schützen den Naturraum und schaffen neue öffentliche Anbindungen, also eine stärkere Verbindung zur Stadt. Mit „Re:Habitat Freudenau“ entsteht ein Modellprojekt für nachhaltige und soziale Stadtentwicklung, das brachliegende Flächen revitalisiert, Naturräume schützt und neue Perspektiven für benachteiligte Gruppen eröffnet.

The south-eastern part of Vienna‘s second district, known as Freudenau, is an alluvial forest area with a diverse natural and cultural environment with a special microclimate and high biodiversity. Situated on the outskirts of the city and yet close to it, the region is increasingly inactive due to a lack of infrastructure and declining use of leisure and event areas, especially the part southeast of the Lusthaus. The project will examine how the area can be revitalized and better connected through urban development interventions and the creation of new institutions. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the area, an architectural and programmatic concept for a permaculture operation has been developed. Historical documents, on-site inspections, interviews and research into comparable projects were included and ecological and social sustainability criteria such as permaculture design principles, modular construction and energy efficiency through recycling systems were taken into account in the project. The ensemble includes a day center as well as emergency and guest accommodation and is run by temporary residents, mostly vulnerable groups of people. This provides them with a regulated daily structure and social integration. The site also offers recreational, educational and leisure opportunities for residents and visitors. The concept is based on historical elements and the current Freudenau site and is supplemented and revitalized through urban planning and architectural interventions, thus “giving back” to the city‘s residents as a communal area and local recreation area. Existing structures such as former greenhouses, a vacant pump house and an unused water tower will be integrated into the project. A new bathing area is being created on the banks of the Danube Canal, following on from earlier traditions of use. Deliberately planned pathways protect the natural space and create new public connections, i.e. a stronger link to the city. "Re:Habitat Freudenau” is a model project for sustainable and social urban development that revitalizes derelict areas, protects natural spaces and opens up new prospects for disadvantaged groups.
