Void : An archipelago of in-between spaces

Abstract

Wien erlebt erneut ein rasantes Bevölkerungswachstum, das eine starke Nachfrage nach Bauland und steigende Immobilienpreise antreibt. Der Mangel an koordinierter Planung und Entwicklung sowie die Vernachlässigung der Flächen zwischen und um die Bahntrassen haben zu einer fragmentierten Stadtlandschaft geführt. Diese Masterarbeit mit dem Titel Void [Leere: Ein Archipel der Zwischenräume] untersucht das Potenzial der untergenutzten Bereiche zwischen den Bahnhöfen Spittelau und Heiligenstadt, mit einem Fokus auf städtebauliche Verdichtung über, unter und entlang der Gleisanlagen. Diese Räume, die derzeit als Barrieren im städtischen Gefüge dienen, fragmentieren die Stadt sowohl physisch als auch visuell.Ausgehend von einer Analyse des historischen Kontexts der Region und der aktuellen Stadtplanung interpretiert dieses Projekt diese Flächen nicht als bloße Überbleibsel vergangener Planung, sondern als wertvolle Ressourcen für städtebauliche Verdichtung und die Schaffung attraktiver Lebensräume. Durch die Umsetzung eines Netzwerks aus Voids und erhöhten, schwebenden Strukturen, die einen „Archipel der Zwischenräume“ innerhalb der bestehenden Infrastruktur bilden, sowie die Reaktivierung des Dachs des Stadtbahnbogens, schlägt die Arbeit eine Strategie zur urbanen Verdichtung vor. Das Konzept des „Void“ wird dabei als Gestaltungsinstrument auf verschiedenen Maßstabsebenen eingesetzt, das schließlich zur Auswahl eines konkreten Interventionsgebiets führt.Das Projekt berücksichtigt die Bedürfnisse sowohl der Universität für Bodenkultur Wien [BOKU] als auch des umliegenden Stadtteils.Durch die Einführung eines umfassenden Programms bietet der Vorschlag ein Szenario zur Überwindung fehlender Verbindungen im Stadtgefüge, indem fragmentierte Bereiche neu verknüpft und die räumliche sowie soziale Kohärenz des Bezirks gestärkt werden. Gleichzeitig bietet er der Stadt und der lokalen Gemeinschaft einen zukunftsorientierten, nachhaltigen Ansatz für die Lebensmittelproduktion, verankert durch ein Forschungs- und Lernzentrum im Kern des Projekts.Das vorgeschlagene Netzwerk aus Voids und erhöhten, schwebenden Gebäuden schafft einen „urbanen Wohnraum“, einen lebendigen, zugänglichen öffentlichen Ort, der Interaktion und Gemeinschaft fördert.

Vienna is once again experiencing rapid population growth, driving intense demand for developable land and soaring property prices. The lack of coordinated planning and development, coupled with the neglect of spaces between and around railway infrastructure, has resulted in a fragmented urban landscape. This master’s thesis, titled “Void: An Archipelago of In-between Spaces,” explores the potential of underutilized areas between Spittelau and Heiligenstadt train stations, focusing on urban consolidation above, below, and along the railway tracks. These spaces currently act as barriers within the urban fabric, fragmenting the city both physically and visually.Drawing on an analysis of the region’s historical context and current urban planning, this project reinterprets these areas not as mere remnants of past planning but as valuable resources for urban consolidation and the creation of attractive living environments. By implementing a network of voids and elevated, floating structures that form an “archipelago of in-between spaces” within the existing infrastructure, and reactivating the rooftop of the Stadtbahnbogen, the thesis proposes a strategy for urban consolidation. The concept of the “void” is employed as a design tool at multiple scales, ultimately leading to the selection of one potential area for further intervention.The project addresses the needs of both the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences [BOKU] and the surrounding neighborhood.Through the introduction of a comprehensive program, the proposal offers a scenario to overcome missing connections in the urban fabric by reconnecting fragmented areas and enhancing the district’s spatial and social cohesion. Simultaneously, it provides the city and local community with a forward-thinking, sustainable approach to food production, anchored by a research and learning center at the project’s core.The proposed network of voids and elevated, floating buildings creates an “urban living room”, a vibrant, accessible public realm that fosters interaction and community.
