Factors influencing productivity gains through human-robot interaction in construction

Abstract

Wir leben in einer Zeit des Wandels, die durch den zunehmenden Einsatz von Robotik und künstlicher Intelligenz gekennzeichnet ist. Im Vergleich zu anderen Branchen stellt die Bauindustrie aufgrund ihrer komplexen, dynamischen und oft unkontrollierten Umgebung eine besondere Herausforderung für die Implementierung dieser Technologien dar. Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist es daher, einen Beitrag zur schrittweisen Integration der Robotik in die Baubranche zu leisten - insbesondere im Hinblick auf eine produktive Zusammenarbeit zwischen Menschen und Roboter.Zu Beginn der Arbeit werden die theoretischen Grundlagen der Baustellenrobotik behandelt. Dies umfasst die Definition relevanter Begriffe sowie eine Einführung in die Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion (HRI), wobei insbesondere untersucht wird, wie Mensch und Roboter ihre Umwelt wahrnehmen und aufeinander reagieren. Ergonomische Aspekte spielen dabei eine zentrale Rolle, da sie das Nutzererlebnis und die Akzeptanz eines Systems maßgeblich beeinflussen, wo ein Roboter ein Teil von diesem System ist. Anschließend werden aktuelle Beispiele von Baurobotern vorgestellt und allgemein die zentralen Herausforderungen bei dem Einsatz von Baurobotern erwähnt.Methodisch stützt sich die Arbeit auf eine Kombination aus Literaturrecherche und empirischer Forschung. Letztere umfasst mehrere Workshops mit Herstellern, Bauunternehmen und dem Institut für Baubetrieb und Bauwirtschaft der TU Wien sowie qualitative Experteninterviews mit Fachleuten aus der Bau- und Robotikbranche.Im Fokus der Analyse stehen die Aspekte Sicherheit, Ausbildung, neue Rollenbilder, Akzeptanz und Produktivität im Kontext der Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion auf Baustellen. Basierend auf einer umfassenden Literaturrecherche aus verschiedenen Industriebereichen werden die Erkenntnisse auf die Bauindustrie übertragen, um Handlungsempfehlungen zu formulieren. Diese Empfehlungen sollen als Grundlage für zukünftige Entwicklungen dienen und die Integration von Robotik im Bauwesen erleichtern.Themen sind unter anderem Sicherheitsvorschriften (Health & Safety Regulations) für Maschinen und Baumaschinen, Risikoanalysen und Risikominderungsmaßnahmen, Ausbildungsprogramme, neue Berufsbilder sowie Strategien zur Förderung von Akzeptanz und Vertrauen gegenüber Robotern im Bauwesen. Die Produktivität gilt dabei als verbindendes Element.Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und Empfehlungen werden abschließend auf den Einsatz des Ziegelroboters von Wienerberger (WLTR) auf einer Baustelle in Pelhřimov angewendet. Basierend auf die Literaturrecherche, Annahmen und einer Befragung von Bedienern und Entwicklern von WLTR werden die Handlungsempfehlungen angepasst und dargestellt.Die angesprochenen Aspekte werden im Kontext der Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion betrachtet. Da diese eine zentrale Rolle für die erfolgreiche Integration der Robotik in die Baupraxis spielt und maßgeblich zur Sicherheit, Akzeptanz und Produktivität auf Baustellen beiträgt, liegt der Fokus dieser Diplomarbeit auf der systematischen Analyse und Gestaltung einer produktiven Mensch-Roboter-Interaktion im Bauwesen.

We live in a time of transformation, marked by the increasing use of robotics and artificial intelligence. Compared to other industries, the construction sector faces a particular challenge in implementing these technologies due to its complex, dynamic, and often uncontrolled environment. Therefore, this thesis aims to contribute to the gradual integration of robotics into the construction industry—especially regarding productive collaboration between humans and robots.The theoretical foundations of construction robotics are addressed at the beginning of the thesis. This includes the definition of relevant terms and an introduction to human-robot interaction (HRI), focusing on how humans and robots perceive their environment and respond to one another. Ergonomic aspects play a central role in this, as they significantly influence user experience and system acceptance—especially where a robot is part of that system. Afterwards, current examples of construction robots are presented, and the general central challenges associated with the deployment of construction robots are discussed.Methodologically, the thesis relies on a combination of literature review and empirical research. The latter includes several workshops with manufacturers, construction companies, and the Institute of Construction Management and Economics at the Technical University of Vienna, as well as qualitative expert interviews with professionals from both the construction and robotics sectors.The analysis focuses on safety, training, new role profiles, acceptance, and productivity in the context of human-robot interaction on construction sites. Based on a wide literature review from various industries, the findings are transferred to the construction sector to formulate recommendations for action. These recommendations are intended to serve as a foundation for future developments and to facilitate the integration of robotics in construction.Topics include health and safety regulations for machinery and construction equipment, risk assessments and mitigation measures, training programs, new professional roles, and strategies for promoting acceptance & trust in robots in the construction context. Productivity serves as the unifying element throughout.Finally, the insights and recommendations are applied to using the brick-laying robot developed by Wienerberger (WLTR) at a construction site in Pelhřimov. Based on the literature review, assumptions, and a survey of WLTR operators and developers, the recommendations are adapted and presented.The aspects discussed are considered in the context of human-robot interaction. As this interaction plays a key role in successfully integrating robotics into construction practice—contributing significantly to safety, acceptance, and productivity on construction sites—this thesis focuses on the systematic analysis and design of productive human-robot interaction in the construction industry.
