Abstract:
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are engines of innovation and growth, yet they often struggle to retain the entrepreneurial spirit that initially propelled their success. As these companies scale, bureaucratic hurdles, diminished employee engagement, and inconsistent managerial practices can erode agility and stifle creativity. This thesis explores how SMEs can “reinvent” themselves to remain innovative, competitive, and attractive to both customers and employees. Several success stories, including Patagonia, Microsoft, Netflix, and Adobe, illustrate the power of a clear vision, transparent leadership, and purposeful investment in employee development and cross-functional collaboration. Conversely, two cases of unsuccessful transformation, Kodak and BlackBerry, highlight the dangers of disregarding market disruptions and clinging to outdated business models. The practical section of this thesis focuses on TESCAN, an electron microscope manufacturer, and its challenges during periods of scaling. As the company expanded, it encountered inefficiencies in scaling processes, a shortage of trained mid-level managers, and siloed teams. Drawing from both literature and practical case studies, this research identifies and characterizes key barriers to TESCAN’s continued growth, including a lack of structured processes, declining employee engagement, insufficient managerial training, stagnation in innovation, and overall strategic misalignment. The role of a strong CEO in overcoming these challenges is also discussed. To address these hurdles, the thesis describes hands-on approaches supported by a structured framework and practical examples. The recommendations emphasize the importance of a clear strategy and its effective communication, well-defined roles and responsibilities, robust mid-level leadership training, and process alignment to ensure employees are working toward organizational goals. Encouraging an engaged, growth-oriented mindset allows individuals to view obstacles as learning opportunities, with recognition of entrepreneurial initiatives fostering innovation and agility. By integrating these strategies, SMEs can build a resilient foundation for sustainable growth, ensuring their relevance and success in a dynamic business environment.
