In the face of rising global temperatures and increasing energy demands for cooling systems, bioinspired materials offer a promising avenue for sustainable thermal management solutions. This talk presents research on biomimetic cooling, drawing inspiration from the Saharan Silver Ant (Cataglyphis bombycina), whose unique cuticular microstructures enable passive radiative cooling. Our study explores the fabrication and functionalization of biodegradable chitosan films with microstructures mimicking those of the ant's reflective hairs. The first part of the presentation covers the methodology and findings of our published work, detailing the microfabrication process, optical properties and cooling performance of chitosan films engineered with these bioinspired surface structures. We demonstrate their potential as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional cooling solutions. Building upon this foundation, we extend the concept through advanced fabrication techniques and computational modelling, as outlined in our recent thesis work. We investigate improvements in material durability, scalability of the fabrication process and the integration of tunability for adaptive cooling applications. These advancements bring biomimetic cooling closer to real-world implementation in architecture, packaging and wearable technology. The research underscores the potential of bioinspired, biobased and biodegradable materials in addressing climate challenges, bridging the gap between biology, engineering and sustainable design.
