Study of the long-term stability of MXene-coated Ti64-5HAP samples for potential implant applications

Der demografische Wandel und der steigende Ressourcenverbrauch machen es notwendig, Implantate aus innovativen, langlebigen und biokompatiblen Materialien zu entwickeln. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein neuartiges Kompositmaterial auf Basis von Ti64 und Hydroxylapatit (HAP) untersucht, das mithilfe von Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) als temporärem Porenbildner hergestellt wurde. Ziel war es, die Langzeitstabilität von MXene-beschichteten Ti64-5HAP-Proben unter tribologischer Beanspruchung zu evaluieren.Dazu wurden Tribometertests mit zwei verschiedenen Probenvarianten (Ti64-5HAP mit 5 Gew.-% bzw. 10 Gew.-% CMC) bei unterschiedlichen Prüfzeiten (30 Minuten, 4 Stunden und 24 Stunden) durchgeführt. Als Gegenkörper kamen 100Cr6 und ZrO2 zum Einsatz. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass insbesondere die Kombination aus MXene-beschichteter Ti64-5HAP-5CMC-Probe und ZrO2 nach 24 Stunden ein stabiles Reibverhalten aufwies – mit einer signifikanten Reduktion des Reibkoeffizienten um mehr als 0,6, was einer Verringerung um rund 75% im Vergleich zur unbeschichteten Referenzprobe entspricht. Verantwortlich dafür war die offenporige, unregelmäßig strukturierte Oberfläche, die sowohl Verschleißprodukte als auch MXene-Partikel aufnehmen konnte und dadurch reibungsmindernd wirkte. Diese Erkenntnisse unterstreichen das Potenzial von MXene-beschichteten Ti64-5HAP-Kompositen für zukünftige biokompatible Implantatanwendungen und liefern wertvolle Ansätze für weiterführende Untersuchungen.

Demographic change and the increasing consumption of resources make it necessary to develop implants made of innovative, durable and biocompatible materials. In this work, a novel composite material based on Ti64 and hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated, which was produced using carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as a temporary pore-forming agent. The aim was to evaluate the long-term stability of MXene-coated Ti64-5HAP samples under tribological stress.For this purpose, tribometer tests were carried out with two different sample variants (Ti64-5HAP with 5 wt. % and 10 wt. % CMC) at different test times (30 minutes, 4 hours and 24 hours). 100Cr6 and ZrO2 were used as counter bodies. The results show that the combination of MXene-coated Ti64-5HAP-5CMC sample and ZrO2 in particular exhibited stable friction behaviour after 24 hours – with a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction of more than 0.6, which corresponds to a reduction of around 75 % compared to the uncoated reference sample. This was due to the open-pored, irregularly structured surface, which was able to absorb both wear products and MXene particles, thereby reducing friction.These findings emphasise the potential of MXene-coated Ti64-5HAP composites for future biocompatible implant applications and provide valuable approaches for further investigations.
