Der Bautyp Palasthotel an der Wiener Ringstraße : eine Bauaufgabe veranlasst durch die Weltausstellung 1873

Abstract

Im Hinblick auf den bevorstehenden Besucheransturm während der Weltausstellung im Jahr 1873, erkannte Wien die Notwendigkeit, ihre Kapazitäten für die Unterbringung von Gästen zu erweitern. Im Vergleich zu anderen europäischen Großstädten war die Stadt zu dieser Zeit nur begrenzt mit großen Hotels oder Gasthöfen ausgestattet. Zahlreiche neue Hotels wurden errichtet und existierende Unterkünfte erweitert, modernisiert und angepasst, um den erwartenden Antrag während der Weltausstellung bewältigen zu können. Als Resultat wurden beeindruckende Bauten geschaffen, die bis heute das Stadtbild Wiens prägen und ein bedeutender Bestandteil des Erbes der Weltausstellung darstellen. Vor diesem Hintergrund konzentriert sich diese Arbeit auf den Fußabdruck der Weltausstellung von 1873 im Stadtbild Wiens und untersucht insbesondere die architektonischen, infrastrukturellen Maßnahmen anhand der Hotels. Arbeitsthese: Die Architektur jener Zeit ergänzt den architektonischen Reichtum Wiens und transportiert das Flair der Kaiserzeit in die Gegenwart. Ein interessanter Aspekt hierbei ist die Frage, inwiefern sich die Architektur der Weltausstellung in der Gestaltung der Hotels widerspiegelte? Gab es bestimmte Architekturmerkmale, die sich in den Hotelbauten wiederfanden? Auch die städtebaulichen Merkmale der für die Weltausstellung erbauten Hotels sind von großem Interesse: Wie haben diese den Wiener Städtebau beeinflusst und welche Auswirkungen hatten sie auf die weitere Stadtentwicklung?Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt ist die Auswirkung der architektonischen Stilrichtungen und Innovationen der Ringstraßenära auf die Gestaltung und Entwicklung der Wiener Hotels während der Weltausstellung. Welche Architektursprachen waren in dieser Zeit prägend und wie wurden sie in den Hotelbauten umgesetzt? Diese Fragen bilden den Kern meiner Arbeit und sollen anhand von exemplarischen Beispielen, alten Plänen, Kartenmaterial, Ansichten und schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen untersucht werden. Ziel ist es, ein umfassendes Bild der Entwicklungen im Bereich der Hotelinfrastruktur in Wien während der Weltausstellung zu zeichnen und dabei auch die Auswirkungen auf den Wiener Städtebau zu beleuchten, um abschließend die Frage beantworten zu können: Wie lässt sich das Erbe der Weltausstellung im Wiener Städtebau anhand der architektonischen Merkmale und Entwicklungen der damals errichteten Hotels und Prachtbauten ablesen und wie hat die Struktur der Hotels seit ihrer Errichtung bis heute die städtebauliche Entwicklung beeinflusst?

In anticipation of the upcoming influx of visitors during the 1873 World Exhibition, Vienna recognized the need to expand its capacity for accommodating guests. Compared to other major European cities, Vienna had limited large hotels or inns at the time. Numerous new hotels were built, and existing accommodations were expanded, modernized, and adapted to cope with the expected surge of people during the World Exhibition. As a result, impressive buildings were created that still shape the cityscape of Vienna today and represent a significant part of the legacy of the World Exhibition.Against this backdrop, this paper focuses on the footprint of the 1873 World Exhibition on Vienna's cityscape and examines the architectural and infrastructural measures through the lens of hotels.Thesis statement: The architecture of that time complements Vienna's architectural richness and transports the flair of the imperial era into the present. An interesting aspect is the question of to what extent the architecture of the World Exhibition was reflected in the design of the hotels. Were there specific architectural features that were found in the design of guest accommodations?The urban planning features of the hotels built for the World Exhibition are also of great interest: How did they influence Viennese urban planning and what impact did they have on the city's further development?Another important aspect is the impact of the architectural styles and innovations of the Ringstrassen Era on the design and development of Viennese hotels during the World Exhibition. What new forms of design and architectural styles were influential during this time, and how were they implemented in the construction of hotels?These questions form the core of my work and will be examined using exemplary examples, old plans, maps, views, and written records. The aim is to draw a comprehensive picture of the developments in the area of hotel infrastructure in Vienna during the World Exhibition, while also shedding light on the impact on Viennese urban planning, to ultimately answer the question: How can the legacy of the World Exhibition be read in Viennese urban planning based on the architectural features and developments of the hotels and grand buildings constructed at the time, and how have the structures of the hotels influenced urban development since their construction to the present day?
