Tracing the past : housing the future : reimagining the site of blocks 2-10 in nuuk, Greenland, by navigating the boundary between colonial history and cultural identity

Abstract

In der unberührten Natur Grönlands liegt eine Welt atemberaubender Schönheit. Das Land ist unter anderem bekannt für seine beeindruckende Eisberge, welche man unter anderem im UNESCO-geschützten Eisfjord Ilulissat betrachten kann. Dort lösen sie sich von einem der aktivsten Gletscher der Welt und treiben anschließend ins Meer (UNESCO World Heritage Convention, o. D.). Allerdings wird Grönlands Identität nicht nur von seiner natürlichen Landschaft geprägt. Der dänische Kolonialismus hatte erhebliche Auswirkungen auf grönländische Urbanisierungs- und Wohnmuster, wobei kleine Küstengemeinden des Landes unter dem Einfluss Dänemarks oftmals in städtische Zentren verlegt wurden (Sejersen, 2007, S. 27). Neben diesen europäischen Einflüssen hinterließ die militärische Präsenz der USA während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und des Kalten Kriegs Spuren in Grönland. Die Auswirkungen reichten dabei von diversen Infrastrukturprojekten bis hin zu Veränderungen im sozialen Leben (De Jonghe, 2022). Heute befindet sich Grönland im Wandel Richtung Selbstverwaltung mit dem Ziel größerer Unabhängigkeit. In diesem Zusammenhang gilt die sogenannte „Home Rule“ aus dem Jahr 1979 als bedeutender Wendepunkt für das Land (Sejersen, 2007, S. 28). Zudem wurden in den vergangenen Jahren Stadtentwicklungsstrategien für die Haupstadt Nuuk entwickelt, die darauf abzielen, eine städtische Umgebung zu schaffen, die kulturelle Identität berücksichtigt und sowohl Gemeinschaft als auch Nachhaltigkeit fördert (Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, 2011).Die vorliegende Arbeit soll zeigen, inwiefern eine historische Analyse in ein neues, kulturell sensibles Wohnkonzept für den Bauplatz der Wohnblöcke 2-10 in Nuuk einfließen kann. A world of breathtaking beauty unfolds in the untouched nature of Greenland. The country is, among other things, known for its impressive, enormous icebergs that one can observe in the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, where one of the world’s most active glaciers continuously calves them into the sea (UNESCO World Heritage Convention, n.d.). However, Greenland’s identity is not only shaped by its natural landscape. A long history of Danish colonialism has had significant impacts on housing patterns and urbanization projects in recent decades, whereas decentralized coastal communities were moved into urban centers under Danish leadership (Sejersen, 2007, p. 27). Besides these urban developments, U.S. militarization during World War II and the Cold War has left a lasting imprint on Greenlandic society and landscape, ranging from infrastructure projects to changes in communal life (De Jonghe, 2022). Today, Greenland is in a stage of a changing landscape of self-governance and the goal of higher independence. In that sense, Home Rule, which was introduced in 1979, counted as a significant turning point for the country (Sejersen, 2007, p. 28). Besides that, strategies for urban development have been published in recent years for the capital, Nuuk. These aim to shape an urban environment that respects cultural identity, fosters community, and promotes sustainability. (Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, 2011). This work aims to exemplify how to incorporate a historical analysis to develop a new, culturally sensitive housing concept for the residential site of Blocks 2-10 in Nuuk.
