Abstract:
Die Herstellung von Waren in urbanen Gebieten, besitzt eine lange Geschichte und hat seit der Industrialisierung unterschiedlichste Stadtlandschaften maßgeblich geprägt. Dennoch wurde der Stadtbaustein Produktion im letzten Jahrhundert schrittweise aus europäischen Städten verdrängt. In Zeiten zunehmender globaler Herausforderungen wie Klimawandel, Ressourcenknappheit und Urbanisierung, ist ein Wandel in der Stadtentwicklung trotzdem wahrnehmbar: Nach einer langen Phase der Verlagerung von (störenden) Betrieben aus den innerstädtischen Bereichen und darüber hinaus, rückt insbesondere durch die stetige Digitalisierung im produktiven Sektor, eine Wiedereingliederung von Produktionsstätten in die Stadtstruktur verstärkt in den Fokus.Als integraler Bestandteil des urbanen Gefüges soll die urbane Produktion dazu beitragen, nachhaltige, nutzungsgemischte und dichte Stadtquartiere zu fördern. Sie schafft räumliche Nähe zwischen Produzent:innen und Kund:innen, sowie Arbeitgeber:innen und Arbeitnehmer:innen und stärkt so lokale Wirtschaftskreisläufe. Allerdings erfordert diese produktive Stadtstruktur neue räumliche Lösungen, da viele ehemalige Produktionsstätten inzwischen einer anderen Nutzung zugeführt wurden oder brachliegen. Aus diesem Gedanken heraus, beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Diplomarbeit mit der Entwicklung neuer und typologischer Ansätze urbaner Produktionsstätten. Mittels Literaturrecherche wird die Thematik aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkel beleuchtet und die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse in einer Entwurfsarbeit am Westbahnareal in Wien erprobt. Das Konzept dafür wird auf Grundlage einer Analyse der bestehenden Lagerhalle im Planungsgebiet abgeleitet. Unter dem Aspekt der kreislaufgerechten Architektur kommt es zu einer teilweisen Bauteilwiederverwendung der vorhandenen Struktur.Die Stadtfabrik Westbahnhof beherbergt eine Vielzahl von produzierenden Unternehmen sowie einzelne öffentliche Nutzungen, die als Bindeglied zur Stadt fungieren. Es entstehen konkrete räumliche Qualitäten, die gleichzeitig einen hohen Grad an individueller Gestaltung und Aneignung ermöglichen.

The production of goods in urban areas has a long history and shaped significantly a wide variety of urban landscapes since industrialization. However, over the past century, production as an urban component has been gradually displaced from European cities. In times of increasing global challenges such as climate change, scarcity of resources and urbanization, a change in urban development is becoming perceptible: After a long phase of relocating (disruptive) industries from inner city areas and beyond, the reintegration of production activities into the urban structure is coming into focus, particularly driven by the ongoing digitalization of the manufacturing sector. As an integral part of the urban fabric, urban production should help to promote sustainable, mixed-use and dense urban districts. It creates spatial proximity between producers and customers, as well as employers and employees, thus strengthening local economic cycles. However, this productive urban structure requires new spatial solutions, as many former production sites have now been put to other uses or are left abandoned. In this context, the present diploma thesis explores the development of new and typological approaches to urban production facilities. Through literature research, the topic is examined from various perspectives, and the insights gained are tested in a design project at the “Westbahnhof” site in Vienna. The concept for the project is derived from an analysis of the existing warehouse building on the planning site. With a focus on circular architecture, the design incorporates partial reuse of the existing structure.The “Stadtfabrik Westbahnof” houses a variety of manufacturing companies, as well as some public functions, which act as a link to the city. The design distinct spatial qualities that nevertheless allow a high degree of individual customization an appropriation.
