Abstract

Diese Diplomarbeit analysiert das architektonische Werk von Kazuo Shinohara und schlägt eine Schlussfolgerung über die Existenz des „Fünften Stils“ vor – eine formale Kontinuität, die sich in seinem Werk erkennen lässt.Sie untersucht, ob eine solche Methodologie extrahiert und in die zeitgenössische architektonische Praxis übertragen werden kann, um Entwürfe zu ermöglichen, die intellektuell fundiert, kontextuell sensibel und kulturell bedeutungsvoll sind. Der Titel „The Fifth Style“ (Der Fünfte Stil) stellt eine abstrakte These über Kontinuität in der Architektur dar. Er wirft die Frage nach intellektuellem und künstlerischem Erbe innerhalb des Gesamtwerks eines Architekten auf.In diesem Zusammenhang impliziert der Fifth Style keine formale Fortsetzung der vier aufeinanderfolgenden Stile, die Shinohara selbst formuliert hat, sondern fungiert vielmehr als destillierte konzeptuelle Antwort auf das komplexe Eouvre Kazuo Shinoharas. Er dient als kritische Linse, als abstrakte These, die Kontinuität innerhalb des Bruchs und Kohärenz im Wandel artikuliert. Methodologie: Die Forschung ist um drei analytische Werkzeuge strukturiert: Zeichnungen, Modelle und Text. Ausgewählte Projekte werden demnach zeichnerisch analysiert, in Modellen rekonstruiert und abstrahiert sowie in schriftlicher Form reflektiert und kontextualisiert.Diese Untersuchung positioniert den Fünften Stil als eine Reflexion über die Natur architektonischen Erbes, der Autor‘innenschaft und des ethischen Handelns im architektonischen Entwerfen.

This diploma thesis analyzes architectural work of Kazuo Shinohara, and proposes a conclusion about the existence of the „5th Style“- a formal continuity found in his work. It explores whether such a methodology can be extracted and transferred into contemporary architectural practice that can offer designs that are intellectually grounded, contextually responsive, and culturally meaningful. The title ‚The Fifth Style‘ represents an abstract proposition about continuity in architecture. It poses the question of intellectual and artistic inheritance within an architect’s body of work. In this context, the Fifth Style does not imply a formal continuation of the four successive styles formulated by Shinohara himself, but rather serves as a distilled conceptual response to the complex oeuvre of Kazuo Shinohara. It functions as a critical lens, an abstract proposition that articulates continuity within rupture and coherence across transformation. Methodology: The research is structured around three analytical tools: drawings, models and text. As such, selected projects are analyzed through drawings, reconstructed and abstracted in models, and contextualized in written reflections. This research positions the Fifth Style as a reflection on the nature of architectural inheritance, authorship and ethical design.
