Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are gradually being integrated into transportation systems, progressively shaping transport dynamics and, by extension, mobility behaviour and spatial experience. Drawing on three cases of AI-based transport applications currently being piloted in Germany, this article explores the present state of AI implementation, with a particular focus on its potential contributions to a sustainable transition in transportation and changes in stakeholder collaboration. We show that the maturity of AI development and application varies, and that despite indirect or direct impacts on transportation systems, the growing influence of AI models does not replace the essential roles of human design, control, and governance. In addition, all cases demonstrate that sustainable transport goals are being pursued–either implicitly or explicitly–and that collaborative governance models are key to prioritising and realising this potential.
