Abstract:
Slow highly charged ions interacting with freestanding 2D materials provide unique insight into ultrafast charge exchange and energy dissipation at surfaces. This tutorial introduces fundamental processes such as hollow atom formation and decay, and explains how transmission spectroscopy and electron emission reveal charge dynamics on the femtosecond scale. Applications for nanostructuring of 2D surfaces are also discussed.
