Radio channel analysis in machine tools

Abstract

Drahtlose Sensorsysteme in Werkzeugmaschinen stehen vor Herausforderungen aufgrund einer atypischen und gefährlichen Umgebung. Die Kommunikationspartner sind in engen Raum mit vielen metallischen Oberflächen, bewegten Objekte, und Verunreinigungen plaziert. Ein Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-basiertes Sensory Tool Holder (STH)-System zur Vermeidung von Rattern ist ein solches System, und dessen Empfangsprobleme sind das Thema dieser Arbeit. Der Funkkanal in einer Werkzeugmaschine wird in einigen einfachen Szenarien charakterisiert, unter Verwendung sowohl von Hochfrequenz Labor- als auch Anwendungs-Hardware in mehreren Messkampagnen. Die Ausbreitungsbedingungen des Funkkanals werden als slow flat small-scale fading bestimmt, mit relativ konstanten räumlichen und spektralen Periodizitäten der Schwundlöcher. Die angulären Schwundloch-Periodizitäten sind hingegen stark positionsabhängig innerhalb der Werkzeugmaschine. Schwundlöcher selbst sind jedoch weniger problematisch für den STH. Es gibt Hinweise auf Störungen durch andere drahtlose Systeme, die die Empfangsprobleme erklären könnten. Unter den Verdächtigten sind angrenzende 4G/5G mobile und stationäre Geräte, aber ohne Störungsmessungen in der Maschinenhalle und Hochfrequenzcharakterisierung des STH bleibt die genaue Ursache unbekannt. Die Bearbeitungsparameter erweisen sich als überraschend einflusslos auf den Funkkanal, da keine zuordenbare Verschlechterung beobachtet wird. Dies ist besonders überraschend für die Verwendung von Kühlschmiermittel und Eintauchen in eine Metallbohrung. Obwohl alle Messkampagnen nur an zwei Instanzen eines Maschinentypen durchgeführt wurden, zeigt diese Arbeit, dass BLE erfolgreich in dieser atypischen Umgebung eingesetzt werden kann.

Wireless sensor systems in machine tools face challenges due to an atypical and hazardous environment. The Communication partners are placed in a confined space with a lot of metallic surfaces, many moving objects and contaminants. A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based Sensory Tool Holder (STH) system for chatter avoidance is such a system, and its reception issues are the topic of this work. The radio channel in a machine tool is characterized by a few simple scenarios using both radio frequency lab- and application-grade hardware during multiple measurement campaigns. The propagation conditions of the radio channel are determined to be slow flat small-scale fading, with relatively constant spatial and spectral periodicities of the fading holes. Angular fading hole periodicities on the other hand vary a lot within the machine tool, dependent on the position. However, fading itself is less problematic for the STH. There are indications for interference from other wireless systems that might explain reception issues. Adjacent 4G/5G mobile and stationary equipment is amongst the suspects, but without interferer measurements on the shop floor and RF characterization of the STH, the exact cause remains unknown. Machining parameters are shown to be astoundingly uninfluential, as no attributable degradation of the radio channel can be observed.This is especially surprising for the use of lubricoolant and submersion inside a metal bore. Even though all measurement campaigns were only conducted on two instances of one machine tool type, it is shown that BLE can be used successfully in this atypical environment.
