The presence of RAP clusters (particles that are agglomerated as a single aggregate) is one of the main factors to increase RAP heterogeneity. During hot mixture asphalt (HMA) production, only part of the RAP binder might be activated, and part of the RAP clusters might be dissociated. The objective of this study is to evaluate the RAP cluster dissociation under two different breakdown modes. First, stages of binder extraction were performed to simulate different levels of cluster dissociation. Second, the Micro-Deval (MD) was used to induce cluster dissociation by combining temperature and mixing time. The RAP particles gradation and shape properties were analyzed. The results indicated that there was a significant impact of the partial cluster dissociation on the RAP aggregate characteristics (gradation and shape properties). Besides, the abrasion time was more relevant than the mixing temperature to breakdown RAP clusters.
