Das MQ-Forum : Aktivierung des Fischer von Erlach-Trakts im MuseumsQuartier Wien : historische Entwicklung, denkmalpflegerische Statements, architektonischer Entwurf

Abstract

In dieser Masterarbeit werden denkmalpflegerische Statements und ein architektonischer Entwurf für die bestandsverträgliche Transformation der Erdgeschosszone des barocken Seitentrakts im MuseumsQuartier Wien entwickelt. Grundlage dafür bildet eine umfassende Analyse der historischen Entwicklung sowie der aktuellen Situation des Areals aus stadtgesellschaftlicher, institutioneller und architektonischer Perspektive. Die Nutzungs- und Baugeschichte, von den kaiserlichen Hofstallungen bis zum Messepalast, prägen das Areal bis heute. Der bislang wenig attraktive und untergenutzte Bereich mit den sogenannten MQ-Schauräumen im Fischer von Erlach-Trakt soll unter dem Namen „MQ-Forum“ in einen konsumfreien, öffentlich zugänglichen Innenraum umgebaut werden. Aufbauend auf der Bestandserfassung werden Handlungsperspektiven definiert. In einem Abwägungsprozess zwischen den erfassten Denkmalwerten, dem Erhalt der Bausubstanz und dem vorhandenen Handlungsbedarf erfolgt eine Bewertung der einzelnen Bauteile. Das Ergebnis sind Erhaltungs- und Gestaltungsleitlinien für vier wesentliche bauliche Maßnahmen, die eine bestandsverträgliche Öffnung und Aktivierung des Straßentraktes ermöglichen. Gemeinsam mit dem Nutzungsplan sowie dem architektonischen Konzept bilden die Leitlinien die Grundlage für den vorgeschlagenen Entwurf. Dieser Prozess gewährleistet, dass die geplante Transformation nachvollziehbar und bestandsverträglich ist. Neben architektonischen Aspekten werden auch bauphysikalische, programmatische und soziale Anforderungen berücksichtigt. Durch den Einbau einer zeitgenössisch interpretierten, barocken Enfilade in den lang gestreckten Innenraum und die Öffnung des Trakts zum belebten Innenhof entsteht ein Raum, der als Forum verstanden werden kann, in dem gemäß den Grundprinzipien des MuseumsQuartiers die erwünschte niederschwellige kulturelle Vermittlung unabhängig von Konsum und Witterung möglich ist. Die Innenräume sind dabei so flexibel gestaltet, dass sie auch zukünftigen Anforderungen und Entwicklungen gemäß dem dynamischen Konzept des Quartiers gerecht werden. Damit präsentiert die Arbeit eine langfristige Lösung für die Nutzung und für den Erhalt der Bausubstanz.

This master’s thesis develops heritage conservation statements and an architectural design for the transformation of the ground floor of the baroque side wings in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier compatible with the existing building stock. This is based on a comprehensive analysis of the historical development and the current situation of the site from an urban, institutional, and architectural perspective. The usage and construction history, from the imperial stables to the trade fair palace, shape the area to this day. The currently unattractive and underutilized area with the so called MQ showrooms within the Fischer von Erlach wing is to be converted into a consumer-free, publicly accessible indoor space under the name “MQ Forum.” Based on analysis of the existing building, action plans are defined. In a process of balancing the recorded heritage values, the preservation of the building structure, and the existing need for action, an assessment of the individual building components is carried out. The result is preservation and design guidelines for four essential structural measures that enable the street wing to be opened and activated in a manner compatible with the existing building stock. Together with the program design and the architectural concepts, these guidelines form the basis for the proposed reconstruction. This process ensures that the planned transformation is comprehensible and compatible with the existing structure. In addition to architectural aspects, thermal building physics and social requirements are also considered. By incorporating a contemporary interpretation of the Baroque “Enfilade” into the elongated interior and by opening the wing to the lively inner courtyard, a space is created that can be understood as a “Forum”. Within this new structure, the aim for low-threshold cultural mediation is possible, in line with the basic principles of the MuseumsQuartier and independent of consumption and weather conditions. The indoor spaces are designed to allow for a variety of uses and thus also meet future requirements and developments in accordance with the dynamic concept of the quarter. The work thus presents a long-term solution for the use and preservation of the historic building.
