Bathing as a bridge : Sentō and theier role in connecting communities

Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit widmet sich der architektonischen und soziokulturellen Bedeutung japanischer Badehäuser, mit besonderem Fokus auf das Sentō: dem städtischen öffentlichen Bad. Ursprünglich aus religiös-rituellen Reinigungspraktiken des Buddhismus hervorgegangen, entwickelte sich das Sentō in der Edo-Zeit zu einem zentralen Bestandteil des urbanen Lebens in Japan. Über seine hygienische Funktion hinaus erfüllt das Sentō bis heute eine wichtige soziale Rolle: Es ist ein niederschwelliger Treffpunkt, ein alltäglicher Ort der Begegnung, der Entspannung und des Austauschs über Generationen hinweg. Dieser gemeinschaftsstiftende Aspekt des Sentō wird im Rahmen der Arbeit in Beziehung gesetzt zu urbanen „Community-Hubs“ in Wien: belebte Märkte, gemeinschaftlich genutzte Gärten, Galerien oder Co-Working-Spaces. Diese Orte fördern produktives Miteinander, sind aber selten auf körperliche oder seelische Regeneration ausgelegt. Die Arbeit untersucht daher, wie sich die Qualitäten beider Kulturen, also die entschleunigte, körperzentrierte Atmosphäre des japanischen Bades und die kreative Betriebsamkeit Wiener Gemeinschaftsorte, in einem transkulturellen Entwurf verbinden lassen. Der entwurfliche Lösungsansatz sieht ein hybrides Raumkonzept in Wien vor, das Sentō-Prinzipien mit den Anforderungen eines urbanen Community Hubs vereint. Ziel ist es, einen Ort zu schaffen, der eine Balance aus Rückzug und Begegnung, Produktivität und Regeneration ermöglicht: Eine Brücke, die Körper, Geist und Gemeinschaft gleichermaßen anspricht.

This thesis examines the architectural and sociocultural significance of Japanese bathhouses, with a particular focus on the sentō: the urban public bath. Originally derived from religious and ritual cleansing practices in Buddhism, the sentō developed into a central component of urban life in Japan during the Edo period. Beyond its hygienic function, the sentō continues to play an important social role today: it is a low-threshold meeting place, an everyday place for encounters, relaxation, and exchange across generations. This community-building aspect of the sentō is related to urban “community hubs” in Vienna: lively markets, communal gardens, galleries, or co-working spaces. These places promote productive coexistence, but are rarely designed for physical or mental regeneration. The work therefore explores how the qualities of both cultures, so the decelerated, body-centered atmosphere of the Japanese bath and the creative bustle of the Viennese community space, can be combined in a transcultural design. The design solution plans a hybrid spatial concept in Vienna that combines sentō principles with the requirements of an urban community hub. The aim is to create a place that strikes a balance between retreat and encounter, productivity and regeneration: a bridge that appeals equally to the body, mind, and community.
