Algen als Ressource: Architektonische Strategien für ein Forschungs-, Produktions- und Innovationszentrum im Adriatischen Raum

Abstract

An der montenegrinischen Adriaküste befindet sich der alte Stützpunkt der Reederei Jugooceanija, eine Erinnerung an die maritime Geschichte und die Modernität des Ortes. Heute ist das ehemalige Gebäude ein leeres, ungenutztes und verfallendes Gebäude. Jede zukünftige Wiederverwendung erfordert sorgfältige architektonische Eingriffe.Was hat die architektonische und funktionale Sanierung des ehemaligen Reederei-Verwaltungsgebäudes mit einer behutsamen Neupositionierung des kulturellen Erbes zu tun und wie können damit zugleich klimaresistente neue Algenzuchtsysteme oder eine nachhaltige Stadt-Küsten-Entwicklung entstehen? Anstatt eines starren architektonischen Eingriffs wird eine offene, adaptive, systemische Maßnahme vorgeschlagen, welche Forschung, Produktion und die Einbindung der Öffentlichkeit umfasst und das Potential eines Ortes als nachhaltige Strategie für ökologische, räumliche und soziale Belange nutzt.Das Projekt sieht vor Architektur nicht als statisches Objekt, sondern als ein fließendes bzw. sich veränderndes Gebilde zu etablieren, welches mit der Landschaft, dem Meer und sich wandelnden Paradigmen des Zusammenlebens koexistiert und in Interaktion steht. Hierbei wird von einer räumlichen Erzählung gesprochen, welche auf der hier entworfenen Gebäudestruktur fußt und zu einem entworfenen, räumlichen Mittelpunkt für neue Produktions- und Bildungswege entlang der Adria-Küste fortsetzt.

On the Montenegrin Adriatic coast lies the former base of the Jugooceanija shipping company, a reminder of the site’s maritime history and modernity. Today, the former building is empty, unused, and decaying. Any future reuse will require careful architectural interventions.What does the architectural and functional renovation of the former shipping company administration building have to do with a careful repositioning of cultural heritage, and how can it simultaneously create climate-resilient new algae cultivation systems or sustainable urban-coastal development?Instead of a rigid architectural intervention, an open, adaptive, systemic measure is proposed that encompasses research, production, and public engagement, harnessing the potential of a place as a sustainable strategy for ecological, spatial, and social concerns.The project envisions establishing architecture not as a static object, but as a fluid and changing entity that coexists and interacts with the landscape, the sea, and changing paradigms of coexistence. This speaks of a spatial narrative that is rooted in the building structure designed here and continues into a designed spatial center for new production and educational pathways along the Adriatic coast.
