IN TRANSIT : reflections on a journey

Abstract

Ausgehend von Bricolage als Methode und theoretischem Ansatz untersucht diese Arbeit, wie sich bestehende Welten betreten, beschreiben und gestalten lassen. Statt einer linearen Erzählung ist sie als Sammlung von Fragmenten aufgebaut: Begegnungen, theoretische Konzepte, gefundene Ideen und Zeichnungen. Diese Fragmente bilden ein Geflecht von Beziehungen zum größeren Thema globaler Infrastrukturen und sind in Form eines Glossars strukturiert. Jeder Eintrag steht für sich und verweist zugleich auf andere.Das Projekt entwickelte sich in zwei Teilen: Der erste, IN TRANSIT, befasst sich mit LKW-FahrerInnen und ihren gesetzlichen Pausen an Autobahnraststätten. Durch immersive Feldforschung - von Raststätte zu Raststätte - werden diese Orte als übersehene Portale des Logistiknetzwerks positioniert: Räume, in denen globale Lieferketten durch Biografien und temporären Wohnformen erfahrbar werden. Eingebettet in Fragen von Logistik und jenen Infrastrukturen, die unseren Komfort ermöglichen, verbindet die Arbeit verkörperte Erfahrungen mit den oft unsichtbaren Architekturen globaler Zirkulation. So bewegt sie sich im Diskurs des Reworlding: nicht als Erfindung neuer Welten, sondern als Überquerung von Schwellen - ein Verlassen der eigenen Welt, um der Wirklichkeit neu zu begegnen: relational und verflochten.Der zweite Teil führt diesen Prozess in Reflexion und Redaktionelles über. Das Glossar wird zum Werkzeug des Ordnens ohne Abschluss - gegliedert in Kapitel wie Bricolage, Kontext, Logistik, Raststätten, Begegnungen, Methode, Entwurf, Reworlding und Transformation. Jeder Eintrag fungiert als Fragment einer größeren Welt und zeigt, wie Gestaltung aus situierter Beobachtung entstehen kann, anstatt aus Abstraktion.

Using bricolage as both a method and theoretical lens, this work explores how to access, describe, and design within existing worlds. Rather than constructing a linear narrative, the diploma is composed of fragments: field encounters, theoretical concepts, found ideas, and drawings. These fragments form a network of interrelated entry points into the larger subject of global infrastructures and are assembled in form of a glossary. Each entry stands on its own yet points to others, creating a web of relations rather than a closed system. The project developed in two parts: The first, IN TRANSIT, focuses on truck drivers and their timed breaks at highway rest stops. Through immersive fieldwork - moving from rest stop to rest stop - the project positions these places as overlooked portals within the logistics network: spaces where global supply chains become tangible through personal biographies and temporary forms of inhabitation. This inquiry is situated within broader questions of logistics and the infrastructures that enable our everyday comfort, linking embodied experiences to the often invisible architectures of global circulation. In doing so, it enters the discourse of Reworlding: not as the invention of new worlds, but as a movement across thresholds, stepping out of one’s own world to re-encounter reality as relational and entangled. The second part of the work extends this process into reflection and editorial structuring. Here, the glossary becomes a tool of ordering without conclusion, structured through chapters such as Bricolage, Context, Logistics, Highway Rest Stops, Encounters, Method, Designing, Reworlding, and Transformation. Each entry operates as a fragment of a larger world - tracing how a project can emerge from situated observation rather than abstraction or invention.
