Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit untersucht die Integration sozialer Nachhaltigkeit als gleichwertige Dimension in Entwurfs- und Planungsprozesse des Siedlungs- und Städtebaus. Während ökonomische und ökologische Aspekte des nachhaltigen Bauens in Praxis und Forschung zunehmend Beachtung finden, bleibt die soziale Komponente oftmals unzureichend definiert und ist konzeptionell schwach verankert. Die Arbeit geht daher der zentralen Fragestellung nach, unter welchen Voraussetzungen und mit welchen gestalterischen sowie planerischen Strategien soziale Nachhaltigkeit in der räumlichen Entwicklung von Gemeinden gestärkt und sichtbar gemacht werden kann.Die Marktgemeinde Oberwaltersdorf im suburbanen Raum Wiens dient als Untersuchungsgebiet und steht exemplarisch für eine zersiedelte und strukturell fragmentierte Ortsentwicklung. Aufbauend auf einer detaillierten Orts- und Umfeldanalyse werden soziale, städtebauliche und gestalterische Defizite identifiziert und im Vergleich zu benachbarten Gemeinden bewertet. Handlungsansetzte und Leitlinien werden auf Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse formuliert, welche als Basis für einen konzeptuellen Entwurf dienen. Dieser verfolgt das Ziel, durch den Einsatz nachwachsender Rohstoffe und räumlich verbindender Elemente einen identitätsstiftenden, sozial wirksamen Ortsraum zu schaffen.Die Methodik der Arbeit kombiniert ortsanalytische, vergleichende und entwurfsbasierte Verfahren. Neben der Untersuchung bestehender Strukturen erfolgt eine Bedarfserhebung sowie die Analyse von Referenzprojekten, aus denen qualitative Anforderungen an Raumprogramm, Gestaltung und Durchwegung abgeleitet werden. Der darauf aufbauende Entwurf wird anhand zuvor definierter Kriterien bewertet und hinsichtlich seiner Übertragbarkeit auf andere Gemeinden im suburbanen Raum geprüft.Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass soziale Nachhaltigkeit maßgeblich durch räumliche und gestalterische Interventionen gefördert werden kann. Der entworfene Ansatz zeigt exemplarisch, wie soziale Aspekte in Stadtplanung und Architektur nicht nur ergänzend, sondern integrativ berücksichtigt werden können.

This thesis examines the integration of social sustainability as an equal dimension in design and planning processes in residential and urban development. While economic and ecological aspects of sustainable construction are receiving increasing attention in practice and research, the social component often remains insufficiently defined and conceptually weak. The thesis therefore addresses the central question of under what conditions and with what design and planning strategies social sustainability can be strengthened and made visible in the spatial development of communities.The market town of Oberwaltersdorf in the suburban area of Vienna serves as the study area and is an example of sprawling and structurally fragmented local development. Based on a detailed analysis of the town and its surroundings, social, urban planning, and design deficits are identified and evaluated in comparison with neighboring communities. Based on these findings, courses of action and guidelines are formulated, which serve as the basis for a conceptual design. The aim of this design is to create an identity-forming, socially effective local space through the use of renewable raw materials and spatially connecting elements.The methodology of the work combines location analysis, comparative and design-based procedures. In addition to examining existing structures, a needs assessment is carried out and reference projects are analyzed to derive qualitative requirements for the spatial program, design and access routes. The resulting design is evaluated on the basis of previously defined criteria and examined with regard to its transferability to other communities in suburban areas.The results illustrate that social sustainability can be significantly promoted through spatial and design interventions. Technical and quantitative parameters such as energy indicators or life cycle analyses are deliberately excluded in order to focus on qualitative, transferable concepts of social and urban sustainability.
