Österreichische Botschaft Singapur : Raum für Diplomatie

Abstract

Botschaften sind die physische Präsenz und die gebaute Identität eines Landes. Sie vereinen Repräsentation, Funktionalität und Sicherheit, schaffen Räume für politische, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Begegnungen und bauen Brücken zwischen Nationen und Gemeinschaften. Eine solche Brücke zwischen Österreich und Singapur steht nun im Zentrum dieser Diplomarbeit. Derzeit befindet sich die österreichische Botschaft in Singapur in mehreren gemieteten Räumlichkeiten, die nur begrenzt Platz haben und keine eigenen Repräsentationsflächen bieten. Dies steht im Kontrast zu den immer wachsenden internationalen Aufgaben der Botschaft und spiegelt nicht die wachsende Bedeutung der bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Ländern wider. Aus diesem Grund soll ein neuer Standort entwickelt werden, der die getrennten Räumlichkeiten der Amtskanzlei, der Wirtschaftsdelegation und der Residenz an einem Ort vereint. Dieser neue Österreich-Hub soll nicht nur die besonderen Anforderungen diplomatischer Gebäude berücksichtigen, sondern auch auf die spezifischen Bedingungen des Standorts Singapur reagieren. Dabei liegen besondere Schwerpunkte auf der städtebaulichen Integration, der Anpassung an das tropische Klima und der Balance zwischen Sicherheit, Offenheit und der architektonischen Identität. Das Ziel ist es, nicht nur ein funktionales Verwaltungsgebäude zu schaffen, sondern einen lebendigen Raum für Diplomatie zu entwickeln.

Embassies are the physical presence and built identity of a nation. They unite representation, functionality and security, creating spaces for political, economic and cultural encounters while building bridges between nations and communities. At the core of this thesis lies the concept of such a bridge between Austria and Singapore. Currently, the Austrian embassy in Singapore operates from multiple leased facilities that offer limited space and lack the necessary areas for formal representation. This stands in contrast to the embassy’s increasingly complex international tasks and does not reflect the growing significance of bilateral relations between the two countries. Therefore, the proposal focuses on the development of a new embassy site that unites the currently separated premises of the chancery, the economic delegation and the ambassador’s residence in a single location. The planning will not only address the specific requirements of diplomatic buildings but also respond to the local conditions of Singapore. Key considerations include urban integration, adaptation to the tropical climate and achieving the balance between security, openness and architectural identity. The goal of the design is not merely to create a functional administrative building but to develop a vibrant space for diplomacy.
