Repräsentation im Wandel : eine Öffnung und Umgestaltung des Fischer-von-Erlach-Traktes im MuseumsQuartier Wien

Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit widmet sich der architektonischen Neudeutung des Mitteltrakts im MuseumsQuartier Wien – jenem Teil, der von Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach ursprünglich als Repräsentationsraum konzipiert war, heute jedoch funktional und räumlich untergeht. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie diese historische Repräsentationsarchitektur in einen zeitgemäßen, offenen und demokratischen erweiterten Stadtraum überführt werden kann. Der Haupteingang zum Quartier im Mittelrisalit fungiert gegenwärtig als Nadelöhr zwischen Stadtraum und Hof und wird den räumlichen Anforderungen eines Kulturareals dieser Größenordnung nicht gerecht. Die Arbeit analysiert die ursprüngliche architektonische Ausformulierung in ihrer Nutzungs- und Baugeschichte – insbesondere das Mittelrisalit, die Ovalhallen und ihre axialen Bezüge. Ziel ist es, den Raum von Nutzungsblockaden zu befreien und durch minimale bauliche Eingriffe ein raumhaltiges Foyer zu schaffen, das sowohl als Bewegungsraum als auch als konsumfreier Aufenthaltsort funktioniert. Der Mitteltrakt soll als vermittelnder Schwellenraum zwischen Stadt und Hof neu gedacht werden: als Ort des Verweilens, der Kunstvermittlung und der öffentlichen Versammlung – ein Eingangsraum, der der Bedeutung des Ortes gerecht wird und die Öffnung des Kulturquartiers zur Stadt architektonisch zelebriert.

This diploma thesis is dedicated to the architectural reinterpretation of the centre wing of the MuseumsQuartier Wien - the part that was originally designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach as a representative space, but is now functionally and spatially submerged. At the centre of the project is the question of how this historic representative architecture can be transformed into a contemporary, open and democratically expanded urban space. The main entrance to the neighbourhood in the central risalit currently functions as a bottleneck between the city and the patio and does not meet the spatial requirements of a cultural area of this size. The work analyses the original architectural formulation in its history of use and construction - in particular the central risalit, the oval halls and their axial references. The aim is to free the space from blockades of use and to create a spacious foyer through minimal structural interventions, which functions both as a space for movement and as a place to spend time without consumption. The central wing is to be rethought as a mediating threshold space between the city and the courtyard: as a place to linger, to mediate art and for public gatherings - an entrance space that does justice to the significance of the location and architecturally celebrates the opening of the cultural quarter to the city.
