Validation of a numerical solution scheme for the motion of a plate on a rough surface

Abstract

Diese Arbeit untersucht die Dynamik flacher starrer Körper, die auf einer horizontalen Ebene unter Coulomb-Reibung gleiten. Das Problem wird im Rahmen der Lagrangen Mechanik unter Verwendung der Dissipationsfunktion nach Rayleigh formuliert, wobei den Ansätzen von A. I. Lurie und M. M. Vetyukov gefolgt wird. Da die entstehenden Bewegungsgleichungen nichtlineare, gekoppelte Integro-differenzialgleichungen sind, wird ein vollständig numerisches Lösungsverfahren entwickelt, das auf geometrischer Diskretisierung und zusammengesetzten Newton–Cotes-Quadraturregeln für Kreis-, Rechteck- und Halbkreisplatten beruht. Ergänzend werden zwei Referenzmodelle implementiert: eine semi-analytische Näherung der allgemeinen Gleichungen für langsame Rotation sowie ein semi-analytisches Modell für Kreisplatten auf Basis von Impuls- und Drallsatz und elliptischen Integralen nach A. Yu. Ishlinskii, Sokolov und Chernousko.Zunächst wird der numerische Ansatz validiert, indem die berechneten Stoppzeiten und dynamischen Antworten mit analytischen und semi-analytischen Referenzlösungen verglichen werden. Für Kreisplatten zeigt sich eine ausgezeichnete Übereinstimmung. Für Platten beliebiger Geometrie bestätigt der Vergleich die korrekte Implementierung und grenzt den Anwendungsbereich der asymptotischen Näherung für langsame Rotation nach Vetyukov ein, deren Grenzen bei stark anisotropen Konfigurationen deutlich werden.Im zweiten Teil wird die Bewegung für verschiedene Plattengeometrien und Anfangsbedingungen analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die laterale Abweichung durch die Plattenform aber vor allem durch das Verhältnis von Rotations- zu Translationskinetik bestimmt wird und im Übergangsbereich ein Maximum erreicht. Größe und Richtung der Abweichung hängen zudem stark von der geometrischen Asymmetrie der Platte und ihrer Anfangsausrichtung bezüglich der translatorischen Anfangsbewegung ab.Die Arbeit zeigt, dass das numerische Lösungsverfahren das dynamische Verhalten aller untersuchten Geometrien zuverlässig reproduziert. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Wirksamkeit der Rayleigh’schen Dissipationsfunktion zur Modellierung von Coulomb-Reibung und liefern ein tieferes Verständnis der gekoppelten translatorisch-rotatorischen Dynamik gleitender starrer Körper.

This thesis investigates the dynamics of flat rigid bodies sliding on a horizontal plane under dry Coulomb friction. The problem is formulated within the Lagrangian framework using Rayleigh’s dissipation function, following the approaches of A. I. Lurie and M. M. Vetyukov. Since the resulting equations of motion contain nonlinear and coupled integro-differential terms, a fully numerical solution scheme is developed using geometric discretization and adaptations of composite Newton–Cotes quadrature rules for circular, rectangular, and semi-circular plates. Two additional reference models are implemented: a semi-analytic approximation of the general equations for slow rotation and a semi-analytic model for circular plates based on linear and angular momentum balance and elliptic integrals, following the study by A. Yu. Ishlinskii, Sokolov, and Chernousko.The first part of the present investigation validates the numerical approach by comparing the computed stopping times and dynamic responses against analytical and semi-analytical reference solutions. For circular plates, excellent agreement is observed. For plates of arbitrary geometry, the comparison confirms the correctness of the implementation and clarifies the domain of applicability of the asymptotic slow-rotation approximation by Vetyukov, whose limitations appear in strongly anisotropic configurations.In the second part, the general motion is analyzed for different plate geometries and initial conditions. The results show that the lateral drift is governed by shape but primarily by the ratio of rotational to translational kinetic energy, and becomes maximal near the transition regime. Furthermore, the magnitude and direction of the deviation of the center of mass from a straight trajectory depend strongly on the geometric asymmetry of the plate and its initial orientation with respect to the direction of translational motion.Overall, the thesis demonstrates that the numerical solution scheme reliably reproduces the dynamic behavior across all investigated geometries. The results highlight the effectiveness of Rayleigh’s dissipation function in handling Coulomb friction and provide deeper insight into the coupled translational–rotational dynamics of sliding rigid bodies.
