Within the research project BioHEAT, two biogenic waste materials were investigated for steam gasification in an advanced dual fluidised (aDFB) bed pilot plant [1]. The goal was to generate a product gas (PG) suited for downstream fluidised bed methanation or direct combustion providing high temperature heat. Following extensive research regarding fuel properties, availability and alternate uses of various biogenic residues, waste wood (WW) and corn cob (CC) were selected for the pilot scale test runs. Both fuels represent cheaper alternatives to traditionally used wood chips, while showing good qualities regarding their compositions in comparison to softwood (SW), as shown in the table below. The pilot scale test runs were conducted in 100 kW scale, which represents 22.1 and 19.4 kg/h of fuel input for WW and CC respectively. During the runs, the conversion of these fuels was investigated under typical conditions for aDFB steam gasification, resulting in bubbling bed temperatures between 780-790°C and a steam-to-fuel ratio of 0.65. However, due to the lower ash deformation temperature of CC, the combustion reactor had to be operated at lower temperatures to avoid ash agglomeration. In turn, the bed material circulation rate was increased, to ensure similar temperatures in the gasification reactor as during WW gasification. The selected parameters ensured that the operating conditions could be properly translated to 1 MW demonstration scale and show off the suitability for application in demonstration scale [2]. As can be seen in the bar chart below, the PG compositions during both test runs showed comparable quality as for gasification of standard SW pellets with slightly higher shares of H2 and lower shares of CO. However, due to the higher share of nitrogen in the fuels themselves, significant concentrations of NH3 were present in the PG, with 15 738 and 5 278 ppmdry for WW and CC, respectively. Based on the more promising results, CC was selected as fuel for demonstration scale operation. This operation was conducted at Syngas Platform Vienna, operated by BEST. The results are still pending, but will be available within a few weeks.
