Achilles tendon injuries in cats often require surgical reinsertion, traditionally performed using a transcalcaneal bone tunnel. This study evaluates whether a bio-absorbable suture anchor provides better resistance to gap formation than the bone tunnel technique. Achilles tendons from seven paired feline specimens were reinserted using either method with a Bunnell-Mayer suture pattern. Tensile tests were conducted in a custom-made experimental setup, replicating physiological loading. During testing, gap formation was tracked and the force was measured. The mean load at a 0.5 mm gap was significantly higher for the suture anchor (44.2 ± 5.5 N) than the bone tunnel (23.0 ± 15.4 N). A 3 mm gap was not reached with the suture anchor. Failure loads were similar between methods and were dominated by suture breakage. Tendon pull-through did not occur. Overall, the suture anchor demonstrated superior resistance to gap formation and may be advantageous for Achilles tendon reinsertion in cats.
