Until now it has been unclear how COVID-19 affected the Facility Services (FS) industry. Most studies on the FS sector and COVID-19 emphasize hygiene measures or new ways of working rather than broader economic impacts. This study provides a cross-sectoral analysis, including the FS sector, of employment and value added at factor cost in the EU and selected European countries before and during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. The European norm EN 15221-4 defines which services are considered FS, while Eurostat provides data on employment, value added at factor cost, and other economic indicators for detailed economic activities. The list of FS was matched with the list of economic activities, and the relevant activities were selected to estimate employment and value added in FS. The results were compared with other economic sectors. Compared to the rest of the economy, employment in FS decreased less in the EU in 2020, and in Italy and Spain the number of employees in FS even increased. In most countries, value added in the FS industry also declined less than in the overall economy, while in Austria and Romania value added in FS increased. The sector most severely affected by the pandemic was the food and accommodation sector.
