Abstract:
From a structural analysis perspective, there are a number of indications that the Basilica of Maxentius collapsed, at least partially, in the first devastating earthquake of Late Antique Rome in 443 AD. This appears to have affected the nave, with its unique system of groined vaults, and possibly the south aisle and the narthex. However, with the tools of building archaeology alone, only a relative chronological dating approach is feasible. For this reason, the results to date have now been considered in a more complex way, particularly in comparison with selected archaeological studies. The overall picture of this crucial area in the centre of ancient Rome, which now emerges as a field of ruins from this synopsis, poignantly reflects the turning point of the city and its world in the 5th century.
