Play ́Round: Ein innovatives Kinderzentrum für Istanbul

Abstract

Diese Diplomarbeit entwickelt einen Kindergarten mit integrierter Kinderbibliothek im Istanbuler Stadtteil Levent und reagiert damit auf das Defizit an kinderorientierter Bildungs- und Sozialinfrastruktur in der Stadt. Das rasante Wachstum Istanbuls führt zunehmend zu einem Mangel an öffentlichen Freiräumen, obwohl die frühe Kindheit die entscheidendste Phase für die kognitive, soziale und emotionale Entwicklung darstellt. Die Arbeit untersucht, wie Architektur offene, flexible und naturbezogene Lernumgebungen schaffen kann, die Spiel, Selbstständigkeit und gemeinsames Lernen fördern. Auf städtischer wie architektonischer Ebene analysiert die Arbeit die demografischen Herausforderungen Istanbuls, das türkische Bildungssystem sowie die räumlichen Qualitäten des Wohnviertels Levent. Der Entwurf umfasst ein eingeschossiges, kinderfreundliches Gebäude mit Gründächern, Höfen und flexibel kombinierbaren Bildungsräumen durch mobile Trennwände, die vielfältige pädagogische Nutzungsmöglichkeiten eröffnen. Die Themenwahl geht auf Eindrücke europäischer Städte zurück, in denen moderne Kinderzentren als offene Treffpunkte für Familien fungieren. Das Fehlen vergleichbarer Angebote in Istanbul war ausschlaggebend, ein neues räumliches Modell zu entwickeln, das die Nachbarschaft stärkt, nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung unterstützt und zur Förderung zukünftiger Generationen beiträgt.

This thesis proposes a kindergarten and children’s library in the Levent district of Istanbul, addressing the lack of child-oriented educational and social infrastructure in the city. Istanbul’s rapid urban growth has led to a decline in accessible public spaces for children, although early childhood is the most critical phase for cognitive, social, and emotional development.The project investigates how architectural design can create inclusive, flexible, and nature-integrated learning environments that support play, independence, and interaction.Operating at both the urban and architectural scales, the thesis analyses Istanbul’s demographic pressures, the educational system in Turkey, and the spatial characteristics of the residential neighborhood of Levent. The design introduces a low-rise, child-friendly building with green roofs, open courtyards, and adaptable learning spaces equipped with movable partitions to enable various educational scenarios.The choice of topic stems from the author’s experiences in European cities, where kindergartens and children‘s libraries function as open community hubs. Observing the absence of similar integrative spaces in Istanbul strengthened the motivation to develop a contemporary model that enhances neighborhood life, supports sustainable urban development, and contributes to the well-being of future generations.
