Botanica Urbana – Eine neue hybride Markthalle für Rom

Abstract

Die ehemalige Blumenmarkthalle „Mercato dei Fiori“ in Rom befindet sich in zentraler Lage, in der Nähe des Vatikans, und erstreckt sich über einen gesamten Stadtblock. Das Gebäude wurde 1965 eröffnet, steht jedoch seit Jahren leer, nachdem im Jahre 2022 das Dach eingestürzt ist und die Stadtverwaltung beschlossen hat, den Markt zu verlegen, anstatt die Struktur zu sanieren. In den letzten Jahren wurde in den Medien, der Wunsch der Anwohner: innen geäußert, diesem Gebäude ein neues Leben zu geben. Diese Diplomarbeit widmet sich einer Neuerrichtung und Wiederbelebung eines Gebäudes, der auf die Fundamente der alten Markthalle beruht. Ziel ist es einen öffentlichen Raum zu schaffen, der den Bewohner: innen des Viertels neue Möglichkeiten der Begegnung und Erholung bietet, als Weiterentwicklung der ursprünglichen Marktidee. Der zentrale Entwurfsansatz besteht darin, die traditionelle Funktion des Marktes zu erweitern und eine dauerhaft aktive Struktur zu entwickeln. Neben klassische Marktflächen werden gastronomische Angebote vorgesehen, während das Herzstück des Projekts ein öffentlich zugängliches Gewächshaus auf dem Dach bildet. Dieses bietet Raum für Urban Gardening, Bildungs- und Freizeitaktivitäten für alle Altersgruppen und soll so soziale Interaktionen fördern. Zur Grundlage des Entwurfs gehört eine Auseinandersetzung mit der historischen Entwicklung des Marktes, von seinen Anfängen bis zu den heutigen Typologien, sowie eine Analyse ausgewählter moderner Marktprojekten in der Welt. Ergänzend wird die Bedeutung des Gartens und des Grünraums im städtischen Kontext und seine Rolle als sozialer und therapeutischer Raum untersucht. Die therapeutische Wirkung des Gewächshauses wird dabei zwar berücksichtigt, steht jedoch nicht im Fokus der Entwurfsbearbeitung. Der Standort im ruhigen, aber gut angebundenen Bezirk Trionfale- DelleVittorie zeigt Defizite an attraktiven gemeinschaftlichen Treffpunkten für Anwohner auf. Ziel des Entwurfs ist die Schaffung eines neuen, generationsübergreifenden Zentrums, das den Stadtteil und seine Lebensqualität aufwertet, durch einen dreigeschossigen Baukörper mit Flächen für Handel, Gastronomie und öffentliche Plätze.

The former flower market “Mercato dei Fiori” in Rome is located in a central area near the Vatican and extends over an entire city block. The building, inaugurated in 1965, has stood vacant for several years after the roof collapsed in 2022. Instead of restoring the structure, the city administration decided to relocate the market. In recent years, both local media and residents have expressed a strong desire to revive this historic site. This master’s thesis focuses on the reconstruction and revitalization of the building. The aim is to create a public space that offers residents new opportunities for encounter, recreation, and participation, as a contemporary evolution of the original market concept. The central design approach seeks to expand the traditional function of the market by developing a structure that remains active throughout the dayand night. In addition to traditional market areas, gastronomic spaces are planned, while the heart of the project is a publicly accessible rooftop greenhouse. This space accommodates urban gardening, educational and recreational activities for all age groups, fostering social interaction and community engagement. The design process includes an exploration of the historical development of markets, from their origins to contemporary typologies, alongside an analysis of selected modern market projects worldwide. Furthermore, the thesis examines the importance of gardens and green spaces in the urban context, particularly their role as social and therapeutic environments. Although the therapeutic potential of the greenhouse is acknowledged, it does not form the primary focus of the design. Located in the quiet yet well-connected district of Trionfale- Delle Vittorie, the site currently lacks attractive communal meeting spaces. The project therefore aims to create a new, intergenerational urban centre that enhances the district’s identity and quality of life through a three-story building complex combining spaces for commerce, gastronomy, and public plazas.
