Development and evaluation of an online tool for dynamic generation of personal biographies

Abstract

Aktuelle Ansätze in der personenzentrierten Pflege erfordern eine manuelle Erhebung von Daten, um daraus eine biografische Darstellung einer Person zu erstellen, was den Prozess zeitaufwendig macht. Um diesen Vorgang zu vereinfachen, untersuchte diese Arbeit das Potenzial von Social Media Daten für diesen Zweck. Es wurde ein Tool konzipiert und entwickelt, welches automatisch Biografien aus den Instagram Daten einer Person erstellt, wofür es einen kombinierten Ansatz aus LLM (Large Langauge Models) und SentenceBert (SBERT) verwendet. Die Implementierung wurde anschließend im Rahmen einer Nutzerstudie mit 11 jungen Erwachsenen evaluiert, bei welcher die Teilnehmenden den Prototypen testeten und im Anschluss interviewt wurden.Die Teilnehmenden konnten erfolgreich Biografien generieren und bewerteten das Ergebnis insgesamt als zutreffend, merkten jedoch fehlende Tiefe und eine verzerrte Darstellung ihrer Person an, da die Ausgabe bestimmte Aspekte der Person zu sehr oder zu wenig betonte oder falsche Schlussfolgerungen enthielt. Durch die Implementierung und Evaluierung des Prototyps demonstrierte diese Arbeit die Machbarkeit eines automatisierten Tools zur Biografieerstellung. Die Erkenntnisse aus der Interviewanalyse und der Verhaltensdaten der Studie bieten Ansätze für künftige Verbesserungen des entwickelten Tools.

Current approaches for person-centered care require manual collection of data to build biographical representations of a person, which makes the process time consuming. To simplify this process, this thesis evaluated the potential use of social media data for this. A tool was designed and developed which automatically generates biographies from a person's Instagram data by using a combined approach of large language models (LLM) and Sentence-BERT (SBERT). The implementation was then evaluated through a user study with 11 young adults, where participants explored the prototype and were interviewed afterwards. Participants succeeded in generating biographies and rated the output as overall accurate, but lacking in depth and creating a skewed image of the participant, as the output over- or under-emphasized aspects of the person or included false conclusions. Through the implementation and evaluation of the prototype, this work demonstrated the feasibility of building an automated tool for the biography generation. Findings from the interview analysis and behavioral data of the study offer potential for future improvements of the developed tool.
