Exit-Strategies within the Core of the Incel Sphere

Abstract

In dieser Arbeit Exitstrategien aus dem Inneren der Incelsphäre wird der meistgesehene Thread mit dem Titel I will approach 1000 girls and find a GF des derzeit aktivsten Incel-Forums incels.is analysiert. Laut der Selbstbeschreibung der Incels geht das eingehen einer Beziehung mit einer Frau einher mit dem Verlassen der Incel-Community. Die Arbeit konzentriert sich genau darauf - auf das Verlassen der Incel-Community, da der Threadersteller genau dies versucht, nämlich eine Partnerin zu finden. Für diese Arbeit werden eine thematische Analyse (TA) nach Braun & Clarke auf Basis einer feministischen Inhaltsanalyse (FCA) nach Patricia Leavy, sowie eine Interaktionsprozessanalyse (IPA) nach Robert F. Bales durchgeführt. Das Ergebnis der IPA zeigt eine aggressive Atmosphäre, die sowohl vom Threadsersteller, als auch von allen anderen Benutzern ausgeht. Solidaritätsbekundungen wurden nur vom Threadersteller empfangen, aber von ihm kaum ausgesprochen. Die Ergebnisse der TA zeigen, dass einige Benutzer Deradikalisierungsansätze im Forum teilten, indem sie die Incel-Ideologie kritisierten, jedoch von den meisten anderen Benutzern auf eine aggressive Weise sehr schnell zum Schweigen gebracht wurden. Dadurch wurde dieser aktive Deradikalisierungsansatz sofort gestoppt. Die Kritik an der Incelsphäre ist auch die stärkste Parallele zwischen den Motiven, die in dieser TA ausgearbeitet worden sind und den Motiven, die in aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten identifiziert wurden, die sich ebenfalls mit Deradikalisierung innerhalb der Incelsphäre befassen. Zu guter Letzt wurde eine Designanalyse durchgeführt, um Designelemente des Forums zu identifizieren, die Radikalisierung fördern könnten. Im Zuge der Designanalyse wurden mehrere Aspekte gefunden, die zusammengenommen die Radikalisierung verstärken, was auch durch das Verhalten der Benutzer und die Atmosphäre der Plattform bestätigt wurde. Beispielsweise können Benutzer ihre Konten nicht selbst löschen und fast alle verwendbaren Emojis zeigen Pepe the Frog – ein bekanntes Symbol der Alt-Right. Ebenso ist das Teilen von Incel-kritischen Ansätzen, (früheren) sexuellen Erfahrungen oder pro-LGBTQIA+-Inhalten verboten. All dies führt zu einem Nährboden für die Reproduktion der Incelideologie. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Stimmung im Forum feindselig und aggressiv ist. Die von wenigen Benutzern geteilten Deradikalisierungsansätze werden von der Mehrheit sofort kritisiert. Kritikäußernden wird damit gedroht von der Plattform verbannt zu werden, was mit einem sofortigen Kontaktabbruch der Community einher gehen würde - teilweise die einzigen sozialen Kontakte und Freundschaften, die Incels haben. Mit dieser Drohung wird auch das Anregen und Teilen von Gedanken gestoppt, die zu Deradikalisierung führen könnten. Das Design der Plattform erzwingt ein bestimmtes Verhalten - in diesem Fall ist es das Verbreiten und Ausleben von frauenfeindlichen und sexistischen Ideologien.

Since according to the self-description of incels, having a relationship with a woman is equivalent to leaving the incel community, this work focuses on exactly that, as the thread creator is trying to find a partner. For this work a Thematic Analysis (TA) according to Braun & Clarke on basis of a Feminist Content Analysis (FCA) according to Patricia Leavy as well as the Interaction Process Analysis (IPA) according to Robert F. Bales are carried out. The result of the IPA shows an aggressive atmosphere emanating from both the thread creator and all other users. Expressions of solidarity were only received by the thread creator but hardly given. The results of the TA revealed that some users from the forum shared deradicalisation approaches in the forum by critiquing the incel ideology, but were immediately and aggressively silenced by most other users. This seemed to halt the active deradicalisation approach. Criticism of the incel sphere is also the strongest parallel between the motives behind this TA and the motives identified in current scientific work that has also dealt with deradicalisation within incel spaces. Last but not least, a design analysis was conducted to identify elements of the forum’s design that could promote radicalisation. In the course of the design analysis, several design choices were detected that, taken together, reinforce radicalisation, which was also confirmed by the behaviour of the users and the vibe of the platform. For example, users cannot delete their accounts, almost all emojis that can be used feature Pepe the frog - a widely known dog-whistle of the alt-right, and sharing incel-critical approaches, personal (former) sexual experiences or pro-LGBTQIA+ content is prohibited. All of these rules and design elements that have been detected leads to a breeding ground for the reproduction of inceldom. Overall, it can be said that the vibe and atmosphere in the forum is hostile, aggressive and unwelcoming. Deradicalisation approaches mentioned by a few users are immediately criticized by the majority of users. These then threaten to block those daring to critique incels and thus trying to prevent them from connecting to the community and their friends and also prevent them from stimulating thoughts which could lead to deradicalisation. Design elements and design choices of the platform enforce certain behaviour, which in this case is sharing and believing in misogynistic and sexist ideologies and support inceldom.
