Between sea and sky : a museum for Taiwanese art

Abstract

Kaohsiung, einst ein Zentrum der Schwerindustrie, verwandelt sich derzeit in eine kulturelle Landschaft. Diese Transformation wird durch Between the Sea and the Sky veranschaulicht, ein zeitgenössisches Museum für taiwanesische Kunst, das sich neben dem Kaohsiung Exhibition Center befindet.Im ersten Teil geht es um die Frage, was ein Museum heute ist und welche Rolle es in der Gesellschaft spielt. Es wird untersucht, wie Museen als kulturelle Orte funktionieren, die Identität, Erinnerung und den Bezug zum Ort miteinander verbinden. Anhand von Beispielen verschiedener Museen wird gezeigt, wie Architektur, Raumaufteilung und die Einbindung in die Stadt das Besuchserlebnis beeinflussen. Diese Fallstudien geben wichtige Hinweise darauf, wie Museen nicht nur Ausstellungsorte sind, sondern auch Zeichen für den Wandel und die Erneuerung einer Stadt sein können.Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit dem Entwurf des Museums. Dabei wird Kaohsiungs Wandel von einer Industriestadt zu einem kulturellen Zentrum näher betrachtet mit Fokus auf den Standort, den kulturellen Hintergrund und die architektonischen Möglichkeiten. Das Museum besteht aus zwei gegensätzlichen Baukörpern: dem bodennahen Sea Block und dem schwebenden Sky Block. Diese beiden Teile stehen symbolisch für die Vergangenheit und die Zukunft der Stadt. Das Museum soll mehr sein als nur ein Ort für Kunst, es wird als öffentliches Wahrzeichen gestaltet, das Kaohsiungs neue kulturelle Ausrichtung unterstützt.

Kaohsiung, once a center of heavy industry, is currently redefining its waterfront into a cultural landscape. This transformation is exemplified by Between Sea and the Sky, a contemporary museum for Taiwanese art located besides the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center. The first part delves into the role and definition of museums, exploring how they function as cultural spaces that bridge the gap between identity, memory, and place. It examines case studies of museums, focusing on how architectural elements, spatial organization, and urban presence shape the visitor experience. These examples provide valuable insights into how museums can serve not only as cultural institutions but also as architectural symbols of civic renewal and evolving identity.The second part presents the architectural design of the museum. This design not only examines Kaohsiung’s transformation from an industrial port to a vibrant cultural city, exploring its site, cultural and architectural context, it also explores the potential to situate the museum within this evolving urban narrative. The project is composed of two contrasting parts: the grounded Sea Block and the elevated Sky Block, the building reflects the city’s industrial past and new artistic future. More than an exhibition space, the museum becomes a civic landmark, aligned with Kaohsiung’s cultural strategy.
