The horse as therapist : it gives us the wings we lack : an equestrian sports and therapy centre

Abstract

Das Ziel des Projekts ist die Schaffung eines Hippotherapie- und Pferdesportzentrums in Ruse, Bulgarien. Das Projekt ist mehr als nur eine moderne Reitanlage – es ist als Ort der Begegnung zwischen Mensch und Pferd, zwischen Bewegung und Stille, zwischen Architektur und Landschaft konzipiert.Obwohl Ruse die sechstgrößte Stadt Bulgariens ist, sind Gesundheitsversorgung und Rehabilitation dort fragmentiert und die sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Bedürfnisse werden noch nicht angemessen erfüllt. Der Vorschlag dieses Projekts zielt darauf ab, diesen Bedürfnissen im städtischen Kontext gerecht zu werden und die Fragmentierung zwischen Gesundheit und Wellness, Inklusion und Kultur zu überbrücken.Der Standort am Stadtrand von Ruse bietet Nähe zum städtischen Gefüge und ist gleichzeitig in ein offenes Gelände eingebettet. Auf diese Weise kann das Projekt sowohl als therapeutischer Rückzugsort als auch als strategische Stadterweiterung dienen, die die Stadt wieder mit der Welt des Pferdesports und der Naturlandschaft verbindet. Die Wahl des Standorts entspricht der Anforderung einer zugänglichen therapeutischen Infrastruktur und bewahrt die für die Hippotherapie erforderliche Ruhe und räumliche Offenheit.Architektonisch vermeidet das Projekt Monumentalität. Stattdessen werden schräge, geschwungene Dächer eingesetzt, die die typischerweise fragmentierten Volumen unter einer architektonischen Landschaft zusammenführen. Die weitläufigen Gründächer integrieren zwei große Reithallen in das Gelände, reduzieren die wahrgenommene Masse der Gebäude und schaffen Zwischenräume. Die Einbeziehung von zwei separaten Reithallen ermöglicht die unabhängige, aber gleichzeitige Nutzung für verschiedene Aktivitäten und gewährleistet Privatsphäre und eine sichere Umgebung für Therapiesitzungen.Weitere wichtige Gestaltungsaspekte umfassen die Integration von Therapie- und Unterbringungseinrichtungen, während die architektonische Vision auf das Wohlbefinden sowohl der Pferde als auch der Menschen ausgerichtet ist und nachhaltige Gestaltungsprinzipien nutzt, die die Schaffung umweltfreundlicher Ställe, Weideflächen und Bewegungszonen fördern. Barrierefreie Einrichtungen sind nahtlos in das gesamte Zentrum integriert und gewährleisten einen gleichberechtigten Zugang für Menschen aller Fähigkeiten, um an Reitsportaktivitäten und therapeutischen Maßnahmen teilzunehmen.

The goal of this project is to create a Hippotherapy and Horse Sport Center located in Ruse, Bulgaria. The project is conceived as more than just a modern equestrian facility – it is conceived as a place of encounter between human and horse, between movement and stillness, between architecture and landscape.Despite being the sixth biggest city in Bulgaria, Ruse is a place where healthcare and rehabilitation are fragmented and where the social, economic and cultural needs are not properly met yet. The proposal of this project aims to answer these needs in an urban context and bridge the fragmentation between health and wellness, inclusivity and culture.Located on the outskirts of Ruse, the site offers proximity to the urban fabric and at the same time remains embedded in an open terrain. This way the project can act as both therapeutic retreat and as a strategic urban extension, that reconnects the city with the equestrian world and natural landscapes. The choice of location responds to the requirement for accessible therapeutic infrastructure and preserves the calmness and the spatial openness required for hippotherapy.Architecturally the project avoids monumentality. Instead, it applies sloping curved roofs that bring typically fragmented volumes together under one architectural landscape. The extensive green roofs integrate two large scale riding arenas into the terrain and reduce the perceived mass of the buildings and generate interstitial spaces. The inclusion of two separate indoor riding arenas enables the independent, yet simultaneous use for different activities and ensures privacy and a safe environment for therapeutic sessions.Other important design considerations include integrating therapy and accommodation facilities, while the architectural vision focuses on the well-being of both equine and human inhabitants, using sustainable design principles to crete eco-friendly stables, pasture areas, and excercise zones. Accessibility features are seamlessly integrated throughout the center, guaranteeing equitable access for individuals of all abilities to participate in equestrian pursuits and therapeutic interventions.
