City of Care: Post-extraktive Aneignung von Zukunften einer Bergbaustadt

Abstract

The town of Eisenerz in Styria is facing demographic shifts and vacancies as a consequence of its historical reliance on labour-intensive iron ore mining. With this contribution, we aim to share the situated knowledges on reproductive care activities of a group of dedicated women active in Eisenerz, which have emerged in response to the town’s complex situation. On 8 May 2024, as part of the research project called Post-extractive F*utures and the concluding event of the exhibition City of Care, a future workshop was held. It brought together women committed to various roles of care and maintenance work in Eisenerz to gather potential future scenarios of their town and to develop a time¬line as well as a conceptual town plan together. In this publication, we share the workshop’s minutes to convey the specific situated knowl¬edges of the workshop participants and to demonstrate the potential for creating resilient epistemic alternatives with local actors through co-produced knowledge.
