90mil is a temporary urban community project in Berlin. The space is a one-story building with an outdoor area, nestled in a central neighbourhood of the city, that invites queer people to explore themselves and their art, and build community. The ceiling at 90mil is a classic, standardised office ceiling: a modular system with a 60 × 60 cm grid, aluminium frames and fibreglass panels. It once represented the rise of structured, standardised spaces, driven by efficiency and a globalised world. The ceiling embodies rigid, imposed boundaries, much like the societal constraints many of us face. As a queer community, dismantling this ceiling is an act of reclaiming space. The ceiling is a boundary — a layered facade that hides raw, unpolished surfaces underneath. By dismantling this layer, the authentic materials are revealed, and simultaneously, we as a community gain more space. Once a symbol of standardised uniformity, the ceiling is redefined as a symbol of resistance and creativity.
