Abstract:

Mid-infrared spectroscopy provides rich qualitative and quantitative information on molecular systems, but its application to aqueous and other strongly absorbing liquids is restricted by the limited usable pathlength and by the spectral contribution of the solvent to the baseline. Correcting for the latter requires accurate knowledge of the complex refractive index ñ = n + ik which cannot be obtained from a simple absorbance measurement. Ellipsometry recovers both n and k simultaneously, and combining it with attenuated total reflection (ATR) in an optically thick single-reflection geometry allows a model-free inversion of the ellipsometric parameters Ψ and Δ directly into the optical constants. This work presents the design, construction and full automation of an external-cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL)-based ATR ellipsometer for the mid-Infrared (IR). A rotating-analyzer configuration was chosen together with a custom-designed flow cell of a few microliters internal volume, integrated into an optical cage system and controlled entirely from Python. The two rotation stages were characterized and shown to be sufficiently accurate and reproducible. ATR spectroscopy with the cell was validated on a water/ethanol dilution series against a commercial Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) ATR instrument, with good agreement in band positions and intensities. First ellipsometric measurements of an empty cell and of water were completed and compared to computed values from tabulated optical constants. Small reproducible indentations in the polar plots were traced primarily to a polarization-dependent response of the mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector, with a residual polarizer misalignment as a secondary contribution. The instrument thus constitutes a working proof of concept, with a clear route toward quantitative, model-free extraction of n and k spectra.
