N1-substituted tetrazoles are extremely versatile ligands for iron(II) spin crossover complexes. The class of omega-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl) carboxylic acids is a perfect precursor for the synthesis of fluorescent BODIPY based 1H-tetrazole ligands. Using this fluorescent ligands a family of iron(II) spin crossover compounds can be synthesized using different counter anions to vary the spin transition temperature or influence the spin transition temperature T½ via co-ligand variation. The magnetic and photoluminescent properties are discussed with respect to structural features.
Furthermore, structural peculiarities with respect to the sterically demanding BODIPY unit will be presented.
