Urbane Architekturen der Beständigkeit : die Materialisierung des Vergänglichen am Beipiel Wien

Abstract

Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit untersucht die Grundlagen urbaner Architektur im Spannungsfeld gegenwärtiger Transformationsprozesse. Die Analyse erfolgt auf den drei aufeinander aufbauenden Dimensionen Topologie, Typologie und Morphologie. Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage nach Konzeption und Gestaltung architektonischer Interventionen im Hinblick auf kulturelle Kontinuität und gesellschaftliche Erneuerung – getragen von dem Bewusstsein, dass dem Baubestand hierbei ein stetig wachsendes Gewicht zukommt.Die Topologie erfasst die räumlichen Grundbedingungen, Relationen und Spannungen des Urbanen als Schauplatz kultureller Entfaltung. Architektur wird hier als vermittelnde Praxis zwischen Mensch und Umwelt erörtert, deren Ordnungsprinzipien die soziale Institutionalisierung, die ästhetische Erfahrung und das Potenzial der gestaltenden politischen Öffentlichkeit prägen.Die Typologie wird als methodisches Instrument herangezogen, das die Beziehung zwischen kulturellem Ausdruck und funktionaler Ordnung in wiederkehrenden Mustern der Formbildung verankert. Historische Rationalisierungen von Form und Funktion und die Rolle des Typus im Spannungsfeld von Permanenz und Wandel werden kritisch reflektiert. Das maßgeblich konstante Motiv im Urbanen ist die Polarität zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Raum. Beide Pole stellen jeweils distinkte Anforderungen an die Form und Funktion, die im Prozess der Formbildung stets neu ausgehandelt werden müssen.Die Morphologie betrachtet die Gestaltbildung, in der Materialität, Konstruktion und Artikulation als integrale Parameter zusammenwirken – mit Folgen für Dauerhaftigkeit ebenso wie für Materialökologie und -ökonomie. Physische Beständigkeit und transformative Anpassungsfähigkeit erweisen sich dabei nicht als Gegensätze, sondern als gegenseitig bedingend. Die Rahmenbedingung dieser Wechselbeziehung bildet das Eigentum. Es konstituiert die kulturelle Bedingung, welche die Grenzen architektonischer Artikulation definiert.Dieses Narrativ mündet in einem Entwurf im Kontext des gründerzeitlichen Wiens. Dort, wo historische Stadtstruktur auf zeitgenössische Urbanität trifft, werden die aufgestellten Thesen an einem architektonischen Projekt erprobt. Dieses vereint die räumliche und strukturelle Vermittlung zwischen Permanenz und Wandel, sowie zwischen gemeinschaftlichen und – oft widersprüchlichen – individuellen Anforderungen an den Raum. Der Entwurf versteht sich nicht als Lösung eines Problems, sondern als Phänomen des ihm zugrundeliegenden Narrativs – als kultureller Resonanzkörper, der die Dialektik von Beständigkeit und Transformation im konkreten Stadtraum zu manifestieren sucht.

This thesis investigates the foundations of urban architecture within the tension of contemporary transformation processes. The analysis unfolds across three consecutive dimensions: topology, typology, and morphology. The starting point is the question of the conception and design of architectural interventions with regard to cultural continuity and societal renewal – driven by the awareness that existing building stock is of ever-increasing importance in the built environment.Topology captures the spatial conditions, relations, and tensions of the urban realm as a stage for cultural development. Architecture is discussed here as a mediating practice between humans and their environment, whose principles of order shape social institutionalization, aesthetic experience, and the potential of a creative political public.Typology is employed as a methodical instrument that anchors the relationship between cultural expression and functional order in recurring patterns of formal composition. Historical rationalizations of form and function, as well as the role of the type within the duality of permanence and change, are critically reflected upon. The primary constant motif in the urban context is the polarity between public and private space; both poles pose distinct requirements for form and function, which must be constantly renegotiated in the process of formal creation.Morphology examines the generation of form, in which materiality, construction, and articulation interact as integral parameters – with implications for durability as well as material ecology and economy. Physical permanence and transformative adaptability prove not to be opposites, but rather mutually dependent. The defining framework of this interrelationship is formed by property claim. It constitutes the cultural condition that defines the boundaries of architectural articulation.This narrative culminates in a design task set in the context of Vienna’s Gründerzeit urban fabric. Where the historical city structure meets the challenges of contemporary urbanity, the established theses are tested through an architectural project. It unites the spatial and structural mediation between permanence and change, as well as between collective and — often contradictory — individual demands on space. The design does not view itself as a solution to a problem, but as a phenomenon of its underlying narrative – a culturally resonating body that seeks to manifest the dialectical relationship of permanence and transformation within the concrete urban space.
