Abstract:

Precision positioning and vibration-isolation systems demand actuators with high motor constants, high force densities, low moving masses, and, particularly for vertical applications, efficient gravity compensation. Conventional voice coil actuators (VCAs), while quasi-zero-stiffness, require continuous offset currents for gravity compensation, resulting in persistent power dissipation and thermal loading. This thesis investigates hybrid reluctance actuators (HRAs) as a high-performance alternative, combining a high motor constant with intrinsic negative axial stiffness that can be exploited for zero-power gravity compensation and, through flux control, for active stiffness suppression. Three rotationally symmetric, one-degree-of-freedom (DoF) HRA topologies are compared using static analytical modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) in 2D and 3D, evaluating performance metrics and practical implementation considerations. One topology is selected based on its favorable combination of high motor constant and large negative axial stiffness. The mechanical design addresses permanent magnet (PM) integration, the mover assembly, flexure-based guidance, coil fabrication, Hall-sensor placement, and an adjustable support structure for air-gap tuning. The design is accompanied by modal and electromagnetic analyses. A coupled electromechanical dynamic model is derived, combining the magnetostatic reluctance model with mechanical and electrical dynamics, and validated through closed-loop identification. Two complementary control strategies are implemented and evaluated. First, a cascaded architecture combines an inner flux-control loop for dynamic negative-stiffness compensation with an outer low-bandwidth position and zero-current loop. Second, a high-bandwidth position controller is implemented for tracking applications. The implemented actuator achieves a static motor constant of 107 N/A, approximately five times that of the reference VCA (22.5 N/A). Zero-power gravity compensation is demonstrated by supporting a 7.5 kg payload at I = 0, reducing static power consumption by up to 99 %. Flux control reduces the negative stiffness from the intrinsic value 130 kN/m to around 5 kN/m at 10 Hz, though compensation degrades above 50 Hz. The high-bandwidth position controller features a closed-loop bandwidth of approximately 80 Hz, demonstrating sub-micrometer positioning resolution and a usable range exceeding +/-1 mm.
