Abstract

Tokyo, a city of 9.5 million inhabitants, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Lack of space and housing shortages have long been familiar conditions here. Nevertheless, the city is considered a pioneer when it comes to rethinking living space and housing concepts and fully exploiting the potential of minimal space. During a stay in Tokyo, research was conducted into the types of housing that are emerging under the prevailing social, economic and everyday cultural conditions and the concepts and approaches developed to address the existing space constraints. At the same time, existing Viennese housing traditions and concepts for communal living are examined in order to understand which spatial and social aspects characterise housing in Vienna and to what extent Tokyo-inspired spatial strategies can be embedded in this context. Factors and qualities of both locations that are relevant for affordable, contemporary living, such as shrinking individual living spaces, flexible floor plans, communal living, spatial appropriation and the potential of thresholds and intermediate spaces, are collected and analysed. The aim of this thesis is to use these analyses as a basis for designing the conversion of an old building in Vienna that implements these spatial principles and proposes a contemporary, high-quality alternative form of living.
